  • The visuals and battle scenes carry this movie

    Troy  (2004)

"Troy" is the story of the Greeks' bloody attack on the city of which the movie is named after lead by "Achilles" (Brad Pitt) to bring back "Helen of Troy" (Diane Kruger) to her homeland of Sparta.

The movie is reminicent to the movies of the 1960's visually. The story is a bit weak and lags somewhat, as is some of the acting.

The visuals look amazing, but I watched the movie on a television. This is the kind of movie that must be seen on the silver screen. From what I could see, the director picked the most spectacular shots he could come up with. I was amazed by how the scenery, especially the battles, filled the screen all the way to the distance. There is however way too much tan and brown colors thanks to the buildings and sand that dominates the screen.

Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom have standout performances in "Troy". In fact, I didn't recognize either until I read the cast on Yahoo Movies. Veteran actor Peter O'Toole sadly had only one scene that he stole. Sadly, O'Toole didn't have a bigger role.

Another fine performance was by Pitt. His delivery of the lines could have been better though. Pitt truly stands out in the battle scenes, especially when he is one-on-one with an opponent.

None of the other actors truly stood out in this film. And most of their performances were not as good as a blockbuster movie should have to make it memorable.

A problem with the performances is that none of them are great enough for you to actually care for them. You don't have much sympathy for any who die, including Pitt at the end (sorry for the spoiler). If all involved tried harder, the performances would have stood out like the visuals.

If you want to see a spectacularly visual movie, then this will fit the bill. I do recommend you get the wide-screen format to truly appreciate the scenery. Just don't expect truly amazing performances that a cast such as this could do.

To sum it up, "Troy" is not the epic it was intended to be. All it is is a visually amazing movie with only fair performances that were almost, but not quite perfect.

  • A really good anti-drug movie

    New Jack City  (1991)

Two cops (Ice-T and Judd Nelson) are on the hunt for a ruthless drug lord (Wesley Snipes), who is slowly taking over the New York City when he introduces crack cocaine to the city's drug addicted population. They go undercover on their own when the budget for their Task Force is cut for a short period.

This movie has some of the best acting I've seen in a long time. Nelson, Ice-T and especially Snipes are great in their roles. Mario Van Peebles, who also directed "New Jack City", wasn't in the film that much, but his performance is just as good.

Speaking of Peebles -- his direction was just as good as the performances of his cast. He used light and shadow to the movie's advantage quite well. He also used NYC just as well as he used the gritiest locations available to him to help show the world of a drug addict on quite possibly the most dangerous drug on the streets today.

Another well done part of the movie is the makeup. You actually can believe the addicts are seriously having problems by just looking at them.

There are a few characters who are not well developed, but they do help in advancing the story. In my opinion, the characters of the old man (Bill Cobbs) and the girlfriend of the drug lord (Vanessa Williams) should have been expanded upon a bit more.

Let me warn you on a point or two. There is a lot of gun-play in this movie, as well as a lot of blood. This movie is not for those who can't handle graphic, violent scenes or children. This movie is pretty much for adults. The language is also of a frank nature. It also depicts crack cocaine use.

The message to the movie is as relevant today as it was when this movie was in theaters. It gives a realistic look at the world of a drug addict through the eyes of the pushers and the cops trying to put them behind bars.

If you want a good movie with a message, and don't mind graphic scenes of a violent nature, then "New Jack City" should be on your Must See List.

  • Not a very funny movie

"Ron Burgundy" (Will Ferrell) is the most popular news anchorman in 1970s San Diego, despite being an immature bafoon. His career is jeopardized when the station hires an attractive female reporter (Christina Applegate) who wants to be the first female anchorperson.

This movie is not as funny as the TV promos lead you to believe. Although it does have some funny moments, but not enough to make it a good comedy. The comedy bits that do make you laugh will make you giggle, but nothing more.

The cast itself is fair, but are one-dementional for the most part. The best defined are those played by Applegate and Ferrell.

The performances, for the most part aren't that good as a whole -- with exception to Applegate, and Ferrell. In my opinion, Applegate was the best of the performers in this movie.

The wardrobe was dead on. Even the hairstyles were perfect. You had a sense that you were in the seventies.

Sadly, there was way too many problems with this film. There were a lot of problems in performances and jokes. If you see this in your local video rental shop, don't pick it up.

  • Not just for baseball fans, but has a few flaws

    Major League  (1989)

The widow of the Cleveland Indians owner (Margaret Whitton) wants to leave Cleveland for Miami -- and take the team with her. So, she takes it upon herself to form the worst team she could possibly make to insure low attendance at the Municipal Stadium, the home stadium for the team.

The team, fed up with the treatment from the widow, who now owns the team, and decides that they must pull it together and make it a winning season for the team. A team that hasn't won a title in over 30 years.

There are some pretty good jokes in this movie. You are guaranteed to snicker to laugh out loud. However, there are at least one or two that are dated. None of the jokes are over the top, and are not jammed down your throat.

The cast is really good. Their chemistry is one of the better ones I've seen for an entire cast. You can really believe the team is really a Major League Baseball Club, on and off the field.

There is really good chemistry between Tom Berenger and Rene Russo, who are the love story in the movie. Sadly, the love story is seen more than other subplots in the story.

There are few characters that should be expanded into a much larger role. I would have liked to have seen Bob Uecker's role out of the broadcast position. He is, however, used to highlight parts of the season which is not seen on camera. Uecker lucked out, as he got some of the best one-liners in the movie.

There are a few holes in the script. There are also some missed opertunities for subplots and funny moments. But these are melded into the story and work.

Overall, this is a pretty good movie with a few flaws. In my opinion, this movie is worth looking at if you see it on your video rental store's shelf.

  • More for the fans of the comic book than the general audience

    Daredevil  (2003)

Based on the comic book of the same title, Ben Affleck plays "Matt Murdock", a blind lawyer from the Hell's Kitchen section of New York City. He also plays the vigilante, "Daredevil", who is also known as "The Man Without Fear".

First of all, unlike "Batman" and "Superman," it would be a good idea to familiarize yourself with the main characters: "Daredevil", "Elektra" (Jennifer Garner), "Kingpin" (Michael Clarke Duncan) and "Bullseye" (Colin Farrell). If you don't, then you will not like this movie. People who are regular comic book readers will know the characters more than the general public.

There are many subplots in this movie, one of which is a tabloid reporter (Joe Pantoliano) investigating "Daredevil" and his true identity. The two main plots are the relationship between "Murdock" and "Elektra," and "Murdock" trying to bring "Kingpin" to justice, while "Daredevil" tries to get "Bullseye".

The cast is very good. I was impressed with the way Affleck and Garner's chemistry melded. But I was really impressed with the maniacle performance of Farrell, who injected some comedy into his portrayal of "Bullseye".

Another great part of this movie is the special effects for "Murdock/Daredevil's" "radar", which he got in a chemical accident as a child. Sometimes it's hard to understand the "radar" but it clears up clearly as the "soundwaves" reach "Murdock/Daredevil".

Overall, this movie is only good if you are a comic book reader or you familiarize yourself with the characters. If you don't know the characters, this is not the movie for you.

  • A pretty good movie

    The Firm  (1993)

A young lawyer (Tom Cruise) takes a job in a Memphis law firm who doesn't share his wife's (Jeanne Tripplehorn) feelings about the firm and those working for it until he looks into the deaths of two lawyers in the same firm. He then launches his own investigation into the firm, which captures the attention of the others in the firm -- and the Feds.

It is the performances in this movie that is worth watching. They make what has to be an impossible situation seem possible. None of the actors deliver a poor performance.

The visuals of "The Firm" are not as good as the acting, but they work pretty well. I would have liked to have seen something that aided in the suspense.

Now, I have not read the John Grisham novel this movie is based on. I therefore don't know if the book is better or not. Did this movie make me want to get the book? Probably not.

Overall, the movie is not bad -- it could have been better. If you want a movie that's got good performances, this is one you should check out. Other than the performances, the movie has nothing to offer.
