A very well done movie for it's time. It is reported to have done very well at the box office when it was released. The version that I seen was not exactly like that reported by Hal Erickson. Basil did not see Mr. Wu planning to torture Basil's mother and sister. In fact, Mr. Wu did not plan to torture the women. Mr. Wu gives the mother a choice as to wether Basil or his sister should die. The mother does kill Mr. Wu saving Basil and his sister after a ghostly Nang Ping appears before her dying father and the dying father relents in his plan of revenge. The picture quality of the version that I seen was excellent. I don't know wether it had been a restored copy of the original.
