  • Women and online videos

    Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

    The other day I wrote a post about the YouTube awards, and how I want someone to hold my hand and lead me to the online videos worth watching:

    I'm just not up for random exploring on YouTube. There's just too much out there that's not worth my time. As lame as it might sound, I want someone to hold my hand and lead me to the gems.

    Then I stumbled across this study, and wondered if the two are connected in any way. The study found that women are less drawn to online videos than men, even though they outnumber men on line. Something in me resists research like this. (Who cares? Why always focus on the habits of women vs. men?) But at the same time, it's very intriguing. I know women and men are generally different beasts, and the statistic was not at all surprising. I'm naturally led to wonder: "What is it about me that makes me less interested in wandering around YouTube? Or less interested in YouTube, period? Is this characteristic rooted in my femininity, or in some other personality trait?"

    I'm not sure. Maybe you can tell me by analyzing the top reasons I don't tend to watch many online videos:

    1. I don't have the patience to sort through lots of crap, especially knowing that in the end I might not find a single video that was worth watching;

    2. My sense of humor is my own, and I don't find many online videos as funny as other people (men?) seem to find them; and

    3. My attention span tends to be longer rather than shorter--I want narrative, I want to get sucked into something and then stay there for a while. Online videos often leave me wanting.

    Do other women (or men) share my rationale? Am I missing out? Or is it okay to just consume what my online video mavens spoon-feed me?
