A Ripping Good Yarn
My favorite part of this movie doesn't have much to do with the plot. When Robert Shaw tells the other two men about his shark experience in the Navy, I am absolutely spellbound.
I like movies in which the characters tell stories. Hence the tag I created, "a-good-yarn."

It seems just as possible that the story is true...and they used it in jaws for dramatic effect just as your grandpappy used it for you...

Paul--Is it possible he had some other source? Was he the type of gentleman who would want to see JAWS?

As a little tike, I tried to tell my granddaddy that sharks were just as afraid of us as we are of them (a line of bullshit my mom tried to feed me). He then told me a story of a ship full of navy men who were eaten by sharks when their ship sank in the Pacific. That story alone changed what I thought about sharks for years.
In high school, I was watching JAWS and the exact same story was told by Robert Shaw (who has a bone-chilling, "I am Ishmael" type voice). By then, granddaddy was dead and I've always wondered if he knew the story about the sailor feeding frenzy was originally from the movie JAWS.
