  • One Movie that Towers Over All Others? I Think Not!

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

After watching AFI's "100 Years, 100 Movies: 10th Anniversary", I was dissapointed. "How could they put those movies in those places?" I wondered. "They put 'Lawrence of Arabia' at No. 7 and 'Gone with the Wind' at no. 6! How could they, they're great?" But really got me mad was the movie that was still Numero Uno afer TEN YEARS: "Citizen Kane".  This is going to be my personal rant on "Citizen Kane": citizenkaneisjustanoverratedmoviehowtheheckdiditstayatnumberoneican'tbelieveiti'msotickedoffrightnowifieverfindoutwhomadethiswacklistiwillmakethempaydearlygrrrrr

Yeah. What I'm saying is that although "Citizen Kane" is a fantastic, innovative movie, it is not- I repeat, IS NOT- the best movie ever! Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but always hearing that Citizen Kane is the best movie ever made can get very annoying. Now of course not all movies are equal, so some are better than others when it comes to quality. However, no one should say, "This movie (cough... cough... "Citizen Kane"...cough) is the best movie ever and all other movies pale in comparison! End of discussion!" That's why there really is no best movie ever because different people have dfferent opinions on that subject. Some people may favor "American Pie" over all others; personally, I think "Lawrence of Arabia"  is the best movie ever. It's cool to share opinons, however it doesn't mean I should should start some dumb list and downplay other people's favorite movies because it isn't a fact "Lawrence of Arabia" is the greatest film ever made and people WILL disagee.

  • A Romance with a Dream-like Atmosphere

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Portrait of Jennie, surreal romance/drama from the 1940s starring the underrated Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones, is a fantastic romance that I absolutely adore. It's about a struggling, poor painter named Eben Adams (Cotten) who doesn't have much inspiration for his art. But one strange night in a foggy park he meets a mysterious young girl named Jennie Appleton (Jones), who is dressed in early twentieth century clothes. Eben is mesmorized by the girl and paints portraits of her. Everytime he sees her she is older, so eventually he falls in love th the enigmatic Jennie- even though they live in different time periods! That may not sound as fantastic as I make it out to be, but there's something about this dream-like film that completely charms me. I mean, you really feel that Eben and Jennie are in love, and you feel their pain when they must leave each other. Fom the dialogue to the acting to the scenary to the story, this great movie excells. I thought this movie was astonishing, heart-warming and tender. And if you can ever see it, I hope you can feel the same way too.

  • Movie Can Be Art Too!

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Finally, after years and years of ordeals, Carl Th. Dreyer's masterpiece can finally by viewed in awe by a new generation! Like the title states this movie weaves the tale of the legendary Joan of Arc; however we see her "not in armor, but simple and human." She is stripped away bit by bit until we see the real Joan of Arc, facing harsh judges on her trial that will lead to her her burning at the stake- all of it recorded in a book Dreyer used for the film. Joan, played by the powerful Renee Falconetti ( who, strangely, never made another film) is shown throughout this film as many things: brave, fearful, saintly, clever, and tragic. That is all thanks to the movie's intense, famous close ups that capture every detail: saliva flying fiercely out of a judge's mouth, Joan crying in utter despair, a deceitful judge ominously blocking the shadow of a cross, and even Joan's pain and agony as she burns on the stake and the riot it causes. Add to this movie the fitting Voices of Light, an original opera/oratorio inspired by the film, and you are watching a milestone in film history that will surely stay in your memory after other movies have faded into obscurity.

  • A Moving, Tragic Anime Film

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Grave of the Fireflies is a poignant anime movie set during the last harrowing days of World War Two in Japan. The movie begins with Seita, the main character of this tragedy, dying and telling us of the days before his death. Even with such a simple plot, this movie is amazing, with great, detailed animation and complex characters. Amazingly, this animated movie of the pains and horrors of war seen through the young eyes of two orphans- Seita and his little sister, Setsuko -who are trying to survive their dangerous environment is told excellently with an anti-war message that makes it probably one of the best anti-war films made. It doesn't look at the soldiers fighting or war and it's ideals and politics; it casts all that away to look at something much more simple and moving: how inevitable human conflict affects people, their lives, and their feelings, particularly children and the innocence they lose. And while some scenes to me seemed to be a little overly emotional, I see know that, for some, it is needed because this anime tale is very disturbing, painfully realistic, and heartbreaking. And very great.

  • Freedom By Any Means Necessary

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Algiers, 1957. A brutally tortured man has just tipped-off the whereabouts of Ali La Pointe to French officials. La Pointe is one of the last surviving members of the National Liberation Front (FLN), an organization dedicated to freeing Algeria from the colonial grip of France. Now let's quickly jump to the next scene where where Ali La Pointe, a woman, a boy, and a man are hiding as French forces arrive. Their hiding place is discovered and the four are ordered to surrender or die. The moving camera stops on Ali's tense face, blurring out then focusing again- only this time we are now in 1954 Algiers and Ali is just a petty crook, unknowingly on the way to becoming an important anticolonialist figure. That is just the beginning of this great drama/documentary that focuses not just on Ali, but the whole cause he was involved in.
From 1954 to 1962 you witness the Algerians hard struggle for independence, the rise and fall of the FLN, and their very controversial techniques to achieve freedom, such as bombing and shooting authorities. And all without a foot of newsreel or documentary.
Being an obviously anticolonialist film, you would think that such gritty facts would be omitted to keep this a straight forward movie of good versus evil with nothing blurring the line between the two. In this film that is surely not the case. The fine line between justice and terrorism is erased and the cost of this conflict is equally heavy on both sides. You see teenagers shooting officers in the back, authorities torturing the guilty and innocent alike, women carrying bombs in baskets.. all to the music of Ennio Morricone and the director of this superb film, Gillo Pontecorvo.
This is a movie you should surely watch, unless you are sensitive to the subject matter.

  • This Movie BLOWS

Night At the Museum is basically about a dude (Ben Stiller) who, out of work, has to become the nightwatch man at the museum to support his son, replacing 3 old guys. But what he doesn't know is that, thanks to a magical Egyptian tablet, every night, all of the museum things come alive. As you know, insanity ensues. Now, this movie may sound good to you, but it's not. I didn't like, I just tolerated it. Pointless scenes, wooden dialogue, stiff acting, mushy inspirational speeches, cliches galore, and putting those three old guys as villains for no explained reason- all of this bogs this movie down. Some parts were funny, but overall this is a movie that could have been good but wasn't. It seemed to me to be shallow and thin. But, if you want to see a movie with no depth whatsoever, bad dialogue and acting, and a dumb happily-ever-after ending, I guess this is the movie for you.

  • Post-apocalyptic Mayhem in Neo-Tokyo

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

This is one of my favorite anime films! Based loosely on his own massive manga masterpiece of the same name, Katsuhiro Otomo's anime classic absolutely embodies a dirty, troubled, apocalyptic world in every scene. Set in neo-Tokyo in 2019 after a mysterious cataclysm 31 years ago in 1988 (when this movie was released), the plot seems simple enough: after Kaneda's fellow motorcycle gang member friend Tetsuo is injured in an accident involving a strange kid, their worlds are turned topsy-turvy. Tetsuo, after developing telepathic powers, becomes a super powerful, homicidal maniac, with absolute chaos following him everywhere he goes. He obsessively searches for Akira, a mysterious telepath even more powerful than him, who may or may not be alive. Kaneda joins up with a girl named Kei and an anti-government terrorist group to find Tetsuo... and answers. Don't be fooled; this isn't your average action-packed apocalyptic flick. It's surprisingly deep and rich with detail. Themes and symbolism representing social unrest and collaspe, corruption, evolution, revolution, delinquincy and the fear of wild youth, and especially sudden, violent change- all of that crammed into a 2-hour movie which, for some, may be too hard to swallow in one sitting. Be warned, this isn't any cute Studio Ghibli Japanese animation (not that there's anything wrong with that). It's raw, violent, profane, and at times very sickening. And the ending maybe flat-out confusing! But with amazing detail in the animation that was revolutionary in its time, mind-blowing symbolism, a great plot, and a catchy soundtrack (Kaneda's Theme IS the BEST!) this film is definitely a must see!

  • A Brave Woman Indeed!

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

I have recently seen this movie and it is much better than I imagined. This movie tells the simple tale of a woman (Rahab, I think) and her life: from marriage, to motherhood, to tragedy, and, lastly, to old age... all epic in scope and scale. The backdrop of this wonderful heroine's tale is the India: beautiful, ugly, and dangerous at the same time. Her story, which includes her marriage that puts her family into the moneylender's hands, a crippled husband who runs away so as to not put any more strain on the family, the death of her mother-in-law and two childern, and the ultimate death of one of her children by her hand, is wonderfully done in Technicolor with great music to match. In this epic also lies musical numbers that are actually very good at advancing the story, however it isn't for everyone. This movie is truly one of the greatest in Bollywood film making.

  • A Deadly Sin...Greed

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

To tell you right off, I've never seen a silent movie more bleak, more grotesque, more...fantastic than this one. Now, I'm not a very cheerful person myself, but even I had to admit that this is some dark stuff! Anyway, let me give you a bit of a synopsis. 3 friends live in California. The female friend, who is getting married to the other male friend and not the first one as intended, wins quite a lot of money from a lottery ticket. "Not so bad," you're probably saying to yourself. But let me continue.  The woman becomes unnaturally stingy, her spouse is reaching a muderous breaking point, and the second male, jealous of their sudden fourtune, plans to bring them down. Now, the way I described it may not seem to bad. You HAVE to watch this great piece of film to see how disturbing it is. I promise that you will not go through this whole film without cringing a least once. And this is only in it's 2-hour version! Just imagine how creepy it is in the 4-hour version... or the whole, uncut version...

If anyone has seen the 4-hour version, send me a message so that we can compare the 2- and 4-hour versions and see what I'm missing.

  • Ran~ Akira Kurosawa's Epic Masterpiece

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Ran is a 2 hour and 40 minute stroke of pure genius from the brilliant mind of the late legend Akira Kurosawa. Based loosely on Shakespeare's own masterpiece King Lear, Ran is set in a warring Japan. A lord gives his 3 sons land. The first two flatter him with "honeyed words" but the young third son tells him the truth straight off on this folly of his, causing him to be disinherited and banished along side his father's aid, who tried to stop the banishment. If you've read King Lear, then you've figured that Lord Ichimonji' s two sons will try to get rid of their father and war with each other, leaving their father to go mad in the process. But it isn't King Lear word for word; no, the lengthy dialouge is thrown out, instead replaced with artistic beauty and  expressional colors. Themes like revenge, greed, betrayal, and honor take center stage. Like King Lear, the ending is not a happy one, but the art and depth that went into this great movie shouldn't be overlooked because of it. After 22 years and still losing none of its haunting yet beautiful power, Ran is a masterpiece that all people should see!
