The greatest authors will tell you that they never know where a story is going until they are done with it. This is because if they did, it would paint them into a corner. Authors need the freedom of not knowing what is going to happen next so they can allow characters to act naturally. These authors understand what gives them the most lead way to make a believable insightful story. They can create realistic situations and interactions by allowing themselves to mold them dynamically. The result is a book that allows different readers to take out different things.
Movies that interest me do the same thing, they do not try and guide the viewer to a conclusion, instead they let a story form by itself and leave you to draw out insights. The director is not trying to tell you a simple clean message in these movies, instead they present you with dilemmas, situations and conflicts in the way they encounter them. They accept the fact that they do not know the answers themselves and choose to present you a story that is larger than themselves.
So what movies do I think pass the test? Check out my lists and see.
