Sumerki zhenskoi dushi (Twilight of a Woman's Soul)
I saw this because it was one of three films contained on the DVD "Mad Love: The Films of Evgeni Bauer" that also contains the film The Dying Swan which is on my movie year countdown round #2.
I feel a bit bad giving these films such low ratings. I was really hoping to like them a lot more. When I come across a name of a filmmaker who is more obscure to the public and made their own innovative style of films to certain critical success, I hope to like their films. I want to be able to flaunt their name as someone whose style appealed to me that other people don't hear about as much. Maybe there are egotistical motives there. To make me sound more learned about the world of film?
Well I can sense a certain difference in these films from others that might have been created at the time. But speaking strictly from the way they affected me while watching them, I found them very boring and not very engaging, even though it has a rape and murder scene in it which was the most jarring part. Maybe some of the camera movements were impressive or the framing was unusual for the day. But there is nothing too striking about them by today's standards. The character's motivations and actions were kind of odd and hard to grasp or believe at times as well.
