    The Great Gabbo

I watched this movie because it was paired with Blind Husbands on DVD.  Erich von Stroheim is a strange guy in this film.  Kind of scary and kind of sad but with some real heart in there.  From what little I've heard about the real man, you could maybe describe him the same way.

He plays a ventriloquist named Gabbo who gets to become famous but is a total dick.  The only person he is nice to is his dummy, Otto, who he talks to regularly.  Although since it's a dummy he's basically talking to himself.  But the tricks he does with the dummy are so unbelievable (for instance he eats entire meals while the dummy sings a song) that you almost wonder if this is a supernatural film and the dummy is actually alive.  There was actually a few times when I cared about and felt for the dummy, but then again I may be strange.  Apart from that it's an oddly structured film with bits of other unusual stage acts thrown in.  Although strange and somewhat intriguing, not altogether too entertaining to me.
