The Curse of the Cat People

If you watched the original Cat People and then watched this expecting it to be the sequel you were probably pretty baffled like me.  It turns out this was never intended by Val Lewton to be a sequel really.  The plot and tone are totally different.  Simone Simon's character could have been anyone really.  She doesn't hold any real ties to her character in the original movie.  Or she didn't have to at least to be able to tell basically the same story.  Not only that but actress Elizabeth Russell is in both movies but plays different characters in each one.  It seems as though the studio forced Lewton to title this movie as a sequel to cash in on the success of the original movie.  There aren't even any cats in the movie except a shot that lasts only for a few minutes at the beginning of the movie!

However this movie bored me even more than the first one.  It's not that I don't have any imagination, but I just don't fall for most films about children's fantasy worlds.  The movie also feels really dated with some of the dialogue.  For instance, the teacher's sincere bit of dialogue about "the first spanking is an important occasion."  And Julia Dean is not endearing as she is apparently supposed to be.  She is just beyond annoying.  And what does the Headless Horseman have to do with all this?

    Infernal Affairs  (2002)

    The Departed  (2006)

This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown round #2”.  Read more about that here.

    Mou gaan dou (Infernal Affairs)

This is a solid Hong Konk police vs. crime boss action movie, but I think the only reason it has reached such acclaim and praise (it's on the IMDB top 250!!) is due to it's being remade into The Departed (which I still haven't seen).

I'm not surprised that it was remade though.  I kept thinking about all of the actors that I knew were in The Departed while watching this movie and thinking that it's probably something really amazing.  Well I should probably stop talking about a movie I haven't seen.

I'm not sure why I'm nitpicking this movie that actually has some quite good acting, but I was rather confused at first by the fact that multiple actors play the main characters.  Both of the moles are portrayed by "younger" actors as younger versions of themselves.  The actors playing them are only slightly younger, and it just makes for big confusion.

Anyways, does anyone know if any of the sequels are worthwhile?
