movie year countdown #15 - 1992 - In the Soup

In the Soup  (1992)

This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”.  To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entry

In the Soup

I had fairly high hopes for this movie that just weren't fulfilled.  It won best dramatic feature at the famous 1992 Sundance Film Festival.  And Buscemi is usually one of my favorites.

I kept looking for reasons to like the movie.  And I can tell you there are some.  Seymour Cassel is usually fun to watch (although he probably would get on my nerves if I had to spend all day with him).  There are some moments that really made me laugh, particularly one time when Skippy is giving Adolpho a "ride home".  I can't remember the dialogue exactly, but it felt great.  And the small performance by the man whose house they break into was sort of short and divergent but great as was commented many times in the special features.  I'm looking at the cast list, and I think the actor's name is Sully Boyar.

Other than a few nice moments here and there I felt a bit annoyed with the movie overall.  If a movie is going to be about a guy making a film, it had better be something special.  Because I think since people like to make movies about themselves, movies of that type are too abundant and often too indulgent and a bit pretentious.  Maybe it wasn't something new and the time and I'm judging it backwards, but this is just the way I feel.

None of the characters felt very real, and most of the interactions felt a little too "cute" to me.  Not only that but Adolpho was obviously enthusiastic but also obviously bad at filmmaking.  At least at that stage.  It was a little too uncomfortable to watch for someone who also probably likes movies as much as him but couldn't bear seeing his lack of potential against his enthusiasm.

Now I'll be an ass and rate it.
