    Some Like It Hot  (1959)

    Some Like It Hot

So this is what many people call the funniest movie of all time?  AFI voted it as #1 on their list of the funniest American movies.  Maybe it shows that comedy isn't as universal as drama or it's just further reinforcement that I'm generally irritated by the mainstream, but this movie was far from the perfect comedy experience for me.

For one Marilyn Monroe is significantly annoying.  I'd never seen her in anything before, although to be honest I never had high hopes.

Also, men dressing in drag just isn't inherently funny to me, at least not in the way this movie seems to think it is.  The boys from The Kids in the Hall dress up as woman all the time, not because men dressing up as women is so hilarious but because the characters these guys are able to play as women are hilarious.  I guess the distinction isn't that simple, but there seemed like something all too simple about the comedy in Some Like it Hot.  There wasn't much too innovative or subversive about it other than the men dressing up like women.  Maybe it was more outlandish in the 50's but it doesn't do a great deal for me.

I'm not saying it was altogether not enjoyable.  I'm just reviewing it against it's iconic status.

    Plein soleil (Purple Noon)

The original film version of The Talented Mr. Ripley, and so far the only movie I've seen from this series of novels.  I know there are several out there.

Well I don't have too much to say about the movie.  There are times when things seemed to go a bit slow for me, but overall it was a fairly solid little piece of cinema.

My reviews are getting lame.  Whatever.

    Great Escape: The Untold Story

There's no Spout link for this movie.  It's a television documentary/recreation of the more accurate events that most people are familiar with through the movie The Great Escape.  Pretty great as a bonus feature on the movie's DVD and if you are a history buff.

    Yojimbo

It's the second time I've seen this movie, and hey it's a lot of fun.  Listening to discussion of this film fits you into a whole back and forth history of different directors from all around the globe inspiring each other.  This film was inspired by American film-noir and westerns and was both a tribute and a subversion of the genres while also addressing many Japanese traditions and modern conundrums.  And then of course was itself the inspiration for A Fistful of Dollars which was another movie inspired by and a subversion of American westerns while playing up what was a very Italian viewpoint.

And then of course you can see how the spaghetti westerns further influenced more Japanese and American cinema and it has all gone back and forth.  Well I kind of see this movie as being a pivotal point in the history of sort of a whole genre of radical, gritty, and violent samurai/western theme movies with their own dark sense of humor and style.

I realized how great and radical the music for this movie is too, just like Morricone's score for the inspired spaghetti westerns as well.  I will have to obtain the soundtrack.

    Cape Fear

This movie certainly deserves the adjective "Hitchcockian."  You can tell the filmmakers had him in mind during every step of the process.  The music was even done by Bernard Herrmann!  They did it right though, as this film rivals almost any authentic Hitchcock film I've seen.

Robert Mitchum plays one of cinema's great creep performances.  I know when putting the movie together they tried two give the two lead male roles equal time, but Mitchum just steals it all in every scene he's in.  Gregory Peck knew this too, but as one of the producers (I think) he just let Mitchum go at it because he knew what the movie needed.

I haven't seen Scorsese's version of Cape Fear yet, but I can totally picture DeNiro in the role as well.  Although it's difficult to imagine if it can come close to the original.  I'll seek it out eventually.

    Terminal USA

I can't remember now why I wanted to see this movie.  I guess I'd heard about Jon Moritsugu and just wanted to know what he was about.

Recently I also just saw Pink Flamingos and somehow this felt like it was maybe coming somewhere out of the same universe.  Weird and bad acting.  Although Terminal USA is depraved it's not quite as visually explicit.

Reading an interview with Moritsugu he seems like an interesting guy, but I don't know if I'll be seeking out any more of his movies.

I do give this movie one extra point though for having a character named Fagtoast.  Why would I give it an extra point for that?  I have no idea.
