movie year countdown #36 - 1971 - Get Carter

Under discussion:

Get Carter  (1971)

This blog entry is part of my “movie year countdown”.  To read more about that check out my first Spout filmblog entry.

Get Carter

Maybe I haven't seen enough Michael Caine movies from his young years, but man he is absolutely ruthless here.  I'm not sure if I expected that.

This movie starts out slow for quite a while.  I didn't know if I'd be able to get through it for a while.  But then the action really picks up.  I kind of love that feeling when you are watching a movie and you're rating of it in your head gradually goes up and up.

Can I reiterate the fact that Caine's character is ruthless?  Wow!

Another one of those movies where pretty much every character is reprehensible, except maybe the poor lad who gets the total crap beat out him and looks completely hideous shortly before his girlfiend is coming into town to visit.

This is an ugly England, but I love it.  I think it's often considered one of the best and most influential British films.  There certainly was some originality here.  And it's surprisingly good for being the director's first feature film.  Mike Hodges you are now on my list.  I have to check more of his work out.

Ruthless!

Rating: 9/10
