Not a patch on the 1946 version.
Bill Murray is wonderful in most of his films, but his dry smirking doesn't work in this one. A large disappointment all the way around.

Yup, the 1940s version had such a strong plot and such seriousness (gravitas?) that it spoke through half a century.
