    The Santa Clause  (1994)

While I get really tired of the stance taken in Disney films that grownups are either mean & bad or good but clueless, that kids know everything and should always get their way lest they be the least bit unhappy for even a moment, I do enjoy this film a lot.  It's fun (despite the whiny Charlie who isn't all that cute) and inventive (up to a point); the North Pole workshop is lovely (I especially love Santa's big sleigh bed); I like Bernard the elf and Tim Allen's turn in the central role.  In fact it's Allen who makes this movie worth watching, his humor saving it from being just another of Disney's ridiculous annoyances.

    Withnail & I  (1987)

Don't know how I missed this one all these years.  One of those films people cryptically quote and chortle over in corners.  A bunch of nothing, yet wonderfully funny, while at the same time somewhat sad.  Certain lines get funnier the more you think about them, and there are so many good ones I won't even start.  No wonder it's a cult classic.

    Someone Like You  (2001)

Not engaging; none of the characters were likeable except for Eddie (Hugh Jackman), and I felt he deserved someone better than Jane.  Great cast but disappointing film.

  • An especial favorite

Well-written, layered and thought-provoking as well as funny.  Excellent performances, especially by Oldman, Roth and Dreyfuss.  It was particularly refreshing to see Gary Oldman play something besides a psychotic villain.  He has amazing range that's been under-utilized in the film world.

  • One of my favorite Shakespeare plays

    Twelfth Night  (1998)

yet it's rarely been turned into a satisfactory screen adaptation.  Not sure why that is.  This version has some wonderful performances (love Richard E. Grant) but it doesn't gel or engage as a whole.

  • I couldn't believe it.

    Henry V  (1944)

A boring Sir Larry performance?  Or a boring Shakespeare play?  How could either be possible?  Yet it was so.  I couldn't stay interested in either the story or how it was performed and literally nodded off.  So I was quite skeptical about the buzz Kenneth Branagh's version was getting years later.  Thank gods I gave Branagh a chance--thoroughly loved his rendition.  Hearing his St. Crispin's Day speech made me want to jump up and follow Harry into battle.  Though I still say Henry the Fifth's reason for going to war (according to Shakespeare) was rather thin.

    :-)
