    Phone Booth  (2003)

In the latest Joel Schuhmacher film Colin Farrell starrs as Stu Shepard a guy working in Public Relations who mainly uses lies and deceit to get things done. After calling a client from a phone booth, the phone rings and Stu answers to what he believes to be a prank call. But the caller first reveals an immense knowledge of Stu's wrongdoings and then, when Stu tries to leave the booth, that he has him pinned down with a sniper rifle. After the death of a man by the booth the police arrive and hold Stu responsible, while the caller continues with his game.

Phone Booth has a very fast pace and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the end. Although the main action takes place in the phone booth, the good use of some split screens keeps you up-to-date what is happening elsewhere. The highlights of the movie are surely Colin Farrell, who plays the desperate Stu very convincing, and the caller, who shows very convincing voice acting. Overall a very convincing movie, which I can highly recommend.

    Unleashed  (2005)

Jet Li stars in the newest movie produced and written by Luc Besson. Jet Li plays Danny, who was raised by a money shark and used as a killer. After a car accident Danny can escape from his prisoner and gets adopted by a blind piano repairman (Morgan Freeman).

Jet Li proves in this movie that he can do more than just fight. His portrayal of Danny as a man with no experience other than fighting and how he slowly discovers the world around him is extremely convincing and touching.

Overall a fantastic movie with lots of action as well as drama.

    Sin City  (2005)

Saw Sin City at the "Kino im HB" (Cinema in the main station) in Zuerich and it blew me away. Robert Rodriguez created, with the help of Frank Miller and Quentin Tarantino, a masterpiece. The movie is set in Black & White, but from time to time important things arecoloredd, such as the dress of a beautiful woman or bloody scratches on faces. This gives the movie a special atmosphere, which will surely make it a cult-movie.
I have to warn you though, Sin City is extremely brutal, despite the fact that most of the blood is white or grayish.
The movie tells three separate stories which, in Pulp Fiction style, are shown in chronological disorder and connect in a couple of places.
Go and see it if you can, I can't wait to watch it again

  • One of the best novel adaptions

After rereading the book last week I went to see the movie yesterday evening. I was impressed. It's one of the best novel to screen adaptations I've seen in a long time. Of course there were dozens of things left out, but it stayed extremely true to the spirit of the story and left all the key ingredients in tact. Add to that a splendid cast with stars such as Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman and you get an unforgettable experience. However, for someone who hasn't read the book, the story might move too fast and Grenouille might just remain an enigma.

So if you've read the book and liked it: Go see the movie!

Even though this Japanese anime is 23 years old, it just now played in one of Zürich's cinemas. Nevertheless it is still very up to date and shows clearly the pointlessness of war and the dangers of environmental pollution. I was captured by the stunning visuals and the moving story and can recommend it whole-heartedly to anyone who isn't afraid of insects ;).

    Ghost Rider  (2007)

    Pan's Labyrinth  (2006)

    Smokin' Aces  (2007)

Something special had to happen to celebrate my 25th birthday. And going to the movies all day long is something unique, something I haven't done before :). To my pleasant surprise lots of people decided to join me, even if just for one or two movies. Nevertheless, there were four of us going the whole nine yards.
The day started at 2pm with 'An Inconvenient Truth', Al Gore's documentary about global warming. To be honest, there were now new facts revealed, but it was nevertheless very interesting to see those facts condensed and supported by powerful pictures.
After a short break we continued with 'Pan's Labyrinth', which turned out to be my favorite movie of the day. A compelling fantasy-tale about a small girl trying to flee the cruelties of war into a fantasy world, it isn't a movie for children though.
Third in line was 'Smokin' Aces'. The trailer looked quite promising, but the movie failed miserably. We weren't sure if it wanted to be more comic or more dramatic, but neither approach worked. The term 'mindless violence' quite closely fits the feeling that we left the movie with.
To round things up we visited the midnight screening of 'Ghost Rider'. After 'Smokin' Aces' this was a real joy. The movie was funny and successfully so and still had very cool characters and scenes.
On the whole it was a memorable birthday party :)
