I can't help but compare this film to American History X. While the latter was a bit more on the front line and hit closer to home, This is England is quite gritty. Shaun, the lead, is a lost preteen that has recently lost his father to that war in the Falklands. His Mother is struggling and he is bullied in school. He finds solace with Woody, an older boy and his group of friends. When Combo, an old friend of Wood's, is released from prison, he tries to recruit the group into a racist agenda. Shane is sucked in by Combo's father-like presence and we see the plot line turn grim.

From start to finish this movie was simply amazing. I'm having trouble finding words for it. The characters are so strong and the acting was great, especially the boys who played the main characters. It's put the middle-eastern lifestyle in a whole new perspective for me. Actually I should say that it's shed light onto a world that the US media has shown to be a horrible loveless place. I'm still reeling from this film so I'll have to write more when I've had time ti digest it all.

A week ago today I took my girlfriend to see Love in the Time of Cholera. I read the book from which it's based and figured that this would be the quinisential "chick flick". I was very hyped about the adaptation but knew from past experiences not to expect much. Still, I'm a huge fan of Gabriel García Márquez's work. I've read all his books and a good number of his editorial works as well. Having seen the movie, I can't imagine they'll be adapting any of his other works. His style of writing has been termed "Magical Realism" and is a blur between South American storytelling and senility, imo. To write a screenplay from him is to pluck a bird clean and ask it to fly. I think this was doomed from the beginning. Most things about this movie were par if not subpar. Mike Newell's direction, subpar. the cast was strong and yet somehow came across as fledgling. Newell's most recent notible work, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It's not like he's been pushed to direct lately. I'm thinking New Line Cinema thought that the book sales, and the plot would drive the movie instead of getting this movie to be a work in and of itself. To Newell's credit, the set and costumes were damn good, like Potter. The makeup was atrocious. how many gallons of eggwhites did they use? This is the 21st century people! You can't have a character age 50 years without changing the actor. It's more unpleasant to see a thirty year old person in a wrinkle suit then to see a completely different actor. AHHH. I'm so pissed this movie fell short. If you liked the book... read it again.

I'm not exactly sure how I stumbled upon this little gem. It was in the OnDemand database that my cable provider supplies. If any of you out there use comcast check out OnDemands free movies then independent then Six String Samurai. Anyway, bact to the matter at hand. This movie was delightful. Toatally camped out, rock-a-kurosowa? There's even a half decent Clint Eastwood impressonation in the beginning. The plot is on the weaker side but it's so different than anything else out there that you just have to see it. If you can't catch it on OnDemand then good luck cuz this one's not gonna be on the local blockbuster shelf. Look for it here if you're that interested.
