Watch Everything and Still See ONLY What Is Good

  • Would Have Been the Next "FAHRENHEIT 9/11," If ...

... IF they had added one word to the title to make it National Treasure: Presidents' Book of Secrets.

But It's Still 'Just a Movie'

That's one of the problems with movies 'nowadays' (we say in the grumpy-old-man vernacular)—people don't take movies as "just movies" anymore. That's probably why Bruckheimer didn't name the movie "'Presidents'' Book of Secrets" ... because then it would be seen as 'another conspiracy-theory movie,' and that's not what it was.

It was another 'Indiana Jones'—which itself was another patch in the great fabric of George Lucas's history. (George Lucas has a place reserved in Jerry Bruckheimer's heaven.)

But the movie needed the conspiracy-theory to make it 'realer than Disney's Utopia.' I can tell, because my friend--who fell asleep during the conspiracy-theorizing beginnings of the movie (we went to a late showing, and he had been up since 5:45 that morning), and who is experienced enough to say "been there, done that" to most conspiracy-theory--complained about the movie's fantastic idiocy most of the drive home.

Bruckheimer's Set-Up Makes the Unbelieveable Acceptable

One instance of otherwise-unbelievable events stands out: when Ben Gates gets his lady-friend to take him to the White House Easter-egg-roll, they use her Secret Service guy-friend to sneak into the Oval Office. By knocking him unconscious and stealing his keys? No; By bribing him with a night with the lady-friend and all the money he could imagine? No!

Ben and lady-friend go up to the agent, comment that lady-friend had always wanted to be inside the Oval Office and then DARE the agent to sneak them in ("Awwh, betcha couldn't! Betcha couldn't! Neener-neener-nee-nerrr!)

Any Secret Service agent who wanted to keep his job would have--the second he saw lady-friend, before she or Ben started talking--gone to 'secure' the President and/or his family! Were there any examples of professional government-workers? Not that I saw!

The Bad Thing? Bruckheimer's Film-Making is So Good that Government-Workers Will Think That's How Things Are Actually Done!

You might think I'm brown-nosing there--and maybe I am, a little ... a part in a Bruckheimer movie is bound to come with massive royalties (both in terms of any percentage of the cash and in terms of the massively-good karma!)--but that's also a comment on the general intellect of the masses—how much did you care about 'Global Warming' before An Inconvenient Truth? And how much after (especially if you never saw it)?

Now, just imagine if a good film-maker had been involved! Actually, don't; if you do, 'Global Warming' might be revealed as the extremist farce it actually is! (I know that 'there's all kinds of "evidence" that "the ocean levels are rising," "the seals are suffocating" and "the forests are in flames"; but nature has a way of always balancing things out, and humans have a way of always finding the above-water end of the balance.)

The message we think needs to be continuously put in movie-after-movie: people survive!

    Tomcats  (2001)

I saw the movie Tomcats (starring Jerry O`Connell, Shannon Elizabeth, Jaime Pressly, Jake Busey and Horatio Sanz). It was a standard 'sex is good, but sex-with-love is Heaven'-comedy—the standard being "excellent," true; but I'll probably forget about it in a week or two.

I feel enlightened watching a scene in which Jerry's character is making a deposit in a sperm-bank. It's tastefully filmed (no naughty-parts), but that's not the point.

The point is that the 'stimulational' video he watches in order to make his deposit only gets down to the 'making out in underwear' before he imagines being with Shannon's character and manages a deposit of three full cups (compared to his friend's deposit that barely covers the bottom of one cup).

This offers a clue as to why cleavage is so attractive—because the true mind of man isn't after the actual 'points of interest' as much as 'the clues that indicate posession of those points.'

The man's mind sees the breast's cleavage, and he knows the approximate location, texture, size and shape of the nipple; and so on.

Tomcats--as I said--was a good comedy. That is to say; I enjoyed watching it, but my life won't revolve around it anymore than the lives of the participating comedians do. Rated "R" (appropriately), you won't want to show it to the kids; but there's not much "sex for sex's sake" (all the sex is presented as it would actually happen in real lfe), and of course it has its "Power of Love"-lesson, so I would recommend it for when the kids are asleep.

My memory may be a little slippery in matters of 'television-commercial'-content, but I seem to recall "Progressive Auto Insurance"-commercials claiming that Progressive is 'the only company that quotes competitors' possibly-competitive rates as well as their own.'

While I don't doubt that they stay current on the rates they quote, I could quite-easily cast that doubt; because the description-of-singularity there ('only') is a universal lie. (That is to say that--though Progressive Auto may be the only company that has a company-policy of offering other companies' quotes--an insurance-agent who doesn't offer all possible rates is an ineffective, inefficient, unworthy, dumb∀$$ parasite!)

How do I know that the idea is not singularly Progressive Auto's? By seeing--as nearly everyone else has--Miracle on 34th Street. In that movie (at least the original version), one of the Macy's-executives' first complaints against using Kris Kringle as Santa Claus was that he would send customers to other stores if Macy's didn't have the exact toy the children sought.

So, if Progressive Auto is indeed the originator of the "customer-service that actually serves before purchase," then they are claiming all rights-&-royalties attributed to the producers of Miracle on 34th Street.

    Star Wars  (1977)

    Dogma  (1999)

True, no one exactly does it consciously; but everyone is affected by The Force (whether they choose to acknowledge that effect, there it is).

The Force Lays-Out the Fabric in the Pattern of The King

I especially thought of Aaron Stimpson, because he has probably come closest to "trying to teach me" The Force.

The first thing that comes to mind is our naming of The Force. It was just a regular night, we were having a Mars Hill meeting at Sauced. One of the tables--for some reason--was situated at a 25-to-30°-angle, with a glass sitting on it. Noticing that the glass might slide down, I held out my hand to catch it before it fell off the table. The glass slid into my hand, and Aaron smiled and said, "Using The Force, J?"

Not wanting to seem like some sort of mystic guru (and since Aaron's an "engineer"), I replied, "Well, gravity—sure!"; so--in a manner of speaking--I was 'using The Force.' And there we "named" (knew by mentioning) The Force

However--I realize upon further reflection--'gravity' is not The entire Force. No, The Entire Force is "How Things Fall"--and that is most-admittedly an over-simplification of The Force (for purposes of generalization ... just like we call our creator "God," though she is really many-many-many-more things than just a "Huge Spirit who Loves Us or something").

The 'more-important right now'-definition is 'Using The Force.' I'll spare you all the enlightenment involved (although it's probably not possible to use The Force without Luminesence), and tell you that 'using The Force' is the multi-part process of knowing 'How Things Fall' and placing yourself in the position made opportune thereby.

Before a Mars Hill-meeting, some friends and I were discussing a very-central line from The Passion of the Christ: "See mother? I make all things new!"

My friends agreed that it was the most-powerful line in the movie. I see that's because it was a 'prophecy realized'-moment ... one in which you say something commonly in one context (like with the healing of small 'ouchies') which you apply to a climactic context as well (resurrection after torturous execution).

That reminded me of a change I would have made to a film-series to add a 'prophecy realized'-moment: this film-series ended-up featuring a little boy who is good with tools, who uses his handyness to rise above the ranks of a burgeoning empire, and who eventually dies in defeating the dominant evil of said empire.

The little boy--in the first film of the series--states what makes him special ... what he does. In his last scene alive, it would've been especially powerful if he had made that asserion again as he lay dying (because it was 'doing that' that killed him).

Of course, the ending was filmed way-before the statement was even known! But George Lucas re-edited the first three films of the series (the last three parts of it), so he could've added it! It might even have been more-effective to have the little boy's voiceover--as his elder self lay dying--come in with "I Fix Things."

    The Mummy  (1999)

Of course, I could be wrong; I couldn't remember the name, and didn't see whether IMDb listed the caterers.

But--whatever their name is--I trust that George Lucas's people at Industrial Light & Magic would only choose the best possible caterers to give their own players the edge needed to so-masterfully manifest movies so magnificently!

Don't get me wrong; Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Kevin J. O'Connor, Oded Fehr and Jonathan Hyde (not to mention Erick Avari, Bernard Fox, Stephen Dunham, Corey Johnson, Tuc Watkins, Omid Djalili, Aharon Ipal??, Patricia Velasquez, Carl Chase, Mohammed Afifi, Abderrahim El Aadili, Jake Arnott, Mason Ball, Isobel Brook, James Traherne Burton, Peter Chequer, Porl Smith, Ian Warner and George Lane Cooper ... See? IMDb's good for somethin`) are wonderful professionals along-with the crew listed below, but any one of them will tell you that he/she works better when fed well!

Aside from that little production note: The movie I'm talking about also reminded me why I don't feature any foreign language speech—because I would 'Okie it up' (i.e. pronounce most of the words with a slightly-unsure tone, and yet pronounce them "definitely foreign").

I noticed that when pronouncing names from a historical review I'll put here soon. I think I pronounced most of them right; but I generally used my 'high school'-spanish vowel-pronunciation with any names I wasn't sure of, and some of them were Russian or German.

If I tried to publish any recordings of me speaking a foreign language (without much more study than a read-through), I would be afraid that my inevitable mispronunciations would offend native speakers!

Not to mention the possibility of awakening The Mummy!
