  • American Gigolo - Review

    American Gigolo  (1980)

Melodrama bordering on trite exploitation film, American Gigolo survives almost solely on its interesting visual style and its "fringe" factor (that being the exploits of a high-class male prostitute). The slightly regurgitated story line of an accused searching for those that are taking every measure to set him up for murder has its moments of eye-rolling and laughable dialogue but somehow performances by Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton makes it a fairly enjoyable and visually appealing film.

    Girl  (1999)

With a peculiar flow attempting to recreate the meticulously constructed world of John Hughes, Girl falters consistently throughout but maintains an intriguing sense of self and its main character Andrea. Making the physical, emotional and mental changes from adolescence to collegiate adult is fraught with numerous pratfalls and this films undoing is trying to capture every single one of them within such a short time. However, an endearing quality arises through this "girl"s misadventures and ultimately leaves the viewer guiltily enjoying it or laughing at its absurdity.

    Zoo  (2007)

Uncomfortable yet . . . oddly sympathetic. Beautifully filmed with a hauntingly mesmerizing score. After watching Zoo it has become increasingly hard to form complete thoughts and wrap my mind around the subject matter that the film was able to capture in such an open and fairly unbiased way. Whether out of fascination, disgust or even hatred, Zoo is definitely an interesting film to watch and not one soon forgotten.
