    The Thing  (1982)

There have been multiple battles between aliens: Godzilla vs. King Kong, Alien vs. Predator, to name a few. The biggest battle was at the box office between the most unlikely of combatants, an alien that crashed in Antartica and creates doppelgangers to survive and a short fat blob with long fingers, just wanting to go home. A fight to the death then: The Thing vs. E.T.

We all know who was the victor here, the p.g. goodness of E.T. slaughtered the gorefest that was The Thing. Does that make it the better film? Of course not, box office means nothing when films are advertised as the US box office hit, that means nothing to me; Bringing Down The House was a No.1 hit, shit, more like. To me, The Thing is a much better film, the emotions of E.T. that took over the world did not strike a chord with me. I found it downright dull and almost demeaning. That might anger some people who love it because it doesn't look down on children but to me it did. I grew up on the vhs diet and i loved adult drama. I know The Thing is far more grotesque of an adult drama but it does have it in essence with its paranoia. The direction from Carpenter is brilliant, his casting is amazing with the golden touch from Kurt Russell and an unsettling score from Ennio Morricone.

  • My thoughts on The Godfather

    The Godfather  (1972)

Its very obvious to state that in most film fans top ten lists, they have down The Godfather; so obvious, people leave it out of lists stating its too obvious to have The Godfather in their top 10 film list. Stating on the record, I like the Godfather, however, I cannot watch it ever again, knowing that once is enough. It is an epic, which is not its downfall; it flows at a snails pace, which is also not its downfall. My reasoning for it never ever being considered in my top 10 list, its no fun.

People recall dialogue and mimic Brando all the time; yes, some of the dialogue is perfunctory but waiting so long for these iconic scenes is tiresome. Chopping it up and leaving a "best-of" is not what I'm condoning, that would be pure silliness. The film is good, there is a reason why it is so highly rated but I would rather have fun with a film than repeat the agony of the running length of The Godfather Trilogy again.

  • Mesmirising - Electroma

Big fan of Daft Punk here, first ever gig was when i was 12 and they had released Homework and recently saw them at 02 wireless festival. They will never disappoint me, just like Electroma. Im also a big fan of 70s cinema and this harks back, well let me rephrase, this isnt a film that tries to be like films like Vanishing Point, this is right up there with those 70s films.

Not one single word is uttered, not a single usage of a Daft Punk song, so I know some will be left wanting. I know people who were bored immediately, to those, they are missing out. This film was hypnotic, its crazy.  2 robots wanting to be human but they are shunned by society. Then they go on their journey realising they will never ever really be who they want to be. What will they do? Well this film shows you in such a vivid and beautiful and disturbing way. Seek it out, but be warned it does go at a slower than snails pace.

  • Not a fan of any of the Spideys but at least I was not bored

    Spider-Man 3  (2007)

I love the comics and I love Raimi. It should have been easy match, but other than the first half of the original Spiderman, they have been an utter bore......until the third part of the series. It is an awful film, a shambolic mess, a carwreck....many descriptive terms like that cannot describe how bad this film is. However, I was intrigued throughout that such a film had gotten past quality control and I was never bored, only entranced by the offputting humour and rubbish black spidey. Everything in this film does not work, apart from the obvious Bruce Campbell cameo, which is the only comedy that could be considered good. The film flip flops from action, to drama to comedy in such a haphazard way, that would be fine in Evil Dead but for this series, it just don't work. The action reverts back to slapstick like the first film; in the second film it seemed to get the weight of the characters during action but now they hit walls a million times without a scratch or a sprain. Genius is all i can say. So do i hate it? Or is this so bad I love it? I can't answer either.

  • A great idea, execution lacking

    Westworld  (1973)

This is a great idea of a film, a futuristic theme park full of robots. Its such a good idea it has been homaged/parodied in everything. The casting is brilliant, James Brolin just spilling full of charm and Yul Brynner is pure menace as the robot that won't go away. It doesn't even kick into full gear until 2/3rds of the way through it, but that is obviously its way of lulling the audience into a false sense of security. Unfortunately, like many trailers today, the trailer for this reveals all the twists hence making the beginning a bit of bore as it goes through the motions at a languid pace.

The good points, as I do like this film, are that once it gets into what its wanted to be doing from the start is effectively done. The stunt work is fantastic and the effects are cool. The remake that is in the works has a major problem in that they need Yul Brynner, he makes the film.
