    Clean, Shaven  (1993)

The sound design evokes memories of Darren Aronofsky's Pi, but since this was made first, I guess it's the other way around.

The film is an excellent character study and exploration of what it might be like to have a severe case of schizophrenia. At it's basis it's a story of two men trying to regain control of their lives. One attempting to battle his mental illness so that he maybe reunited with his daughter. The other, attempting to over come his feelings of insecurity and castration/helplessness.

  • Rediculous fun.

    El Mariachi  (1992)

This film is a lot of fun to watch, but it's especially fun if you are a filmmaker yourself. The fact that Rodriguez pulled this thing off for only seven thousand dollars goes a long way to show just how resourceful he is.

At the beginning I found the camera work and editing style a bit jarring and rather irritating, but you quickly find yourself pulled into the world of the film and you just accept the style as quirky.

I believe that most of the dream sequences don't really have that much meaning to Rodriguez and was another case of him trying to make the film seem more important than it ought to be, but it still works. Those sequences end up coming off a bit comical.

And to correct the reviewer below me, Desperado is not a remake of El Mariachi. Desperado is a sequel. There are even flashbacks in Desperado to events that occurred in Mariachi. I don't see how you could think it was a remake unless you haven't seen one or the other.

  • Well rounded story

    La haine  (1995)

You'll find yourself laughing out loud and cringing in disgust/discomfort during this movie. The cinematography is very well done in this film. The almost constantly moving camera work bring you right into the story. You feel as if you are walking around the slums and surrounding areas of Paris right along wtih Vinz, Said, and Hub.

Excellent performances all around. And it is such a shock that this hard hitting film is directed by the quiet and shy love interest in Amelie.

  • Life changing.

This movie is incredibly powerful. What I look for most in a film is its ability to make me feel and react. This film put a tightness in your chest that won't go away until nearly an hour later.

In addition to the subject matter the storytelling techniques used are also well worth the watch. Aronofsky makes excellent use of what he calls "hip hop montage". He did not develop the style of editing (you can find similar cuts in All That Jazz and other films) her certainly perfected it.

Clint Mansell's score is amazing. Who knew the punkish lead singer of Pop Will Eat Itself had this music waiting to burst forth from within him? All around great experience and really encouraged me to start a career in film.
