In a
recent interview, Alex Gibney, Thompson's documentarian said he believes, if the author were alive today, he would be "an Obama guy."
Gibney, himself an Obama fan, said that Obama "stirs peple’s idealism in a way that few people have done in the last 30 years," but went on to ask the question on many of our minds, particularly in light of Obama's "repositioning" on campaign finance and FISA. "Will he make too many compromises once he’s in power?"
Take a look at Gibney's take on what Hunter S. Thompson would say if he still alive. It's strikingly similar to the ideas put forth in
Obama's speech on patriotism.
I think he would say that we’re seeing the triumph of fear and loathing over that other part of the American character, this sense of idealism. Bush represented to him that aspect of the United States that goes back to its inception. At the same time, he was a big Bobby Kennedy fan and big McGovern fan. I think he’d be an Obama guy now. He would say, “Here’s somebody who understands the need for a prime actor in the theater of American politics.
