  • Sen. Leahy's Cameo with Heath Ledger

Sen. Patrick Leahy's film career has taken a macabre turn this week with the mysterious death of 28-year-old "Brokeback Mountain" star Heath Ledger.

The Vermont Democrat, who had silver-screen cameos in two previous Batman movies, has a bit role in "The Dark Knight," the sequel to "Batman Begins," which is set to be released next summer -- though Ledger's death appears to have thrown post production of the film in turmoil. Leahy appears alongside Christian Bale, who plays Batman, and Ledger, who starred as the Joker.

Leahy worked with Ledger during a two-day shoot in Chicago, according to Leahy spokesman David Carle. (The senator took an overnight flight to Davos, Switzerland, for the world economic forum so he was unavailable for comment on Ledger's passing.)

Leahy is no stranger to showbiz. A lifelong Batman fan, Leahy made cameo appearances in the last two Batman movies, has done voice-overs for Batman cartoons and written the preface to a Batman book... and soon, will play a "distinguished gentleman" alongside Ledger, who died Tuesday of as-yet unknown causes. (Leahy, by the way, has said he'll donate his earnings from the movie to the Kellogg-Hubbard children's library in Montpelier, Vt., where he got his first library card.)

  • Stars Weigh in on 'Cloverfield'

    Cloverfield  (2008)

Hollywood celebrities spout off about Cloverfield to Variety's On the Town.

Ron Jeremy, adult film star: "It's like a roller coaster. It's like 'Blair Witch' meets 'Aliens.' I liked it, but I think we got the point that it's handheld. We understand that when you're running, the camera will shake. When you're standing still, shooting somebody's damn face, you don't have to keep moving the camera. I can see a dad filming his kids at Disneyland steadier than this. I've been in porn films that shoot video steadier than this and those cameramen usually suck. They didn't have to make it that out of focus and that shaky. I was getting dizzy and it just gave me a big headache. The scariest part was when I went to the bathroom to vomit, so I would've liked the film more without the vomiting. Listen, I don't mean to knock the film because it's a good movie and it's very well done, except for that camerawork. My entire row wanted to throw up. I had to move to the back and I was still nauseous. The girls were adorable though."

John Krasinski: "I think it's both an incredibly innovative script and idea to bring back the monster genre, but they also started breaking some boundaries in film. The night vision shot in the tunnel was wild. It was kind of like 'Blair Witch' on speed."

Masi Oka: "It was fantastic. I liked that it was a love story in the end. It was very smart and suspenseful."

Scott Speedman: "I didn't know much about it going in. It was one of those movies that I tried not to watch the preview for, so I didn't know a whole lot about it at all. To be honest, I was kind of blown away. The best thing I can say about it is that it's really, really emotional. That's what surprised me the most. Monster movies aren't that emotional but it really got that part down amazingly. There wasn't one specific part that jumped out as the scariest moment, but what's great is how it sets a tone of fear and keeps it going and keeps building on it throughout the movie."

    Casino Royale  (2006)

Sony Pictures has announced that the official title for the 22nd James Bond installment is Quantum of Solace. The title is taken from one of a collection of short stories published by 007 creator Ian Fleming in 1960.

The new film sees 007 (Daniel Craig) out for revenge on a mission that takes him to Austria, Italy and South America. Bond girl Camille, played by Ukrainian-born Olga Kurylenko, leads the secret agent to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), member of a mysterious organization and a ruthless businessman, seeking to control huge natural resources.

The plot follows on directly from Casino Royale, as Bond aims to uncover the truth about Vesper, the beauty who betrayed him, and discovers that she had been blackmailed.

???James Bond is after revenge, and Camille is after revenge and they have slightly different goals, but in the end they are going to have to collaborate,??? Kurylenko said.

At a press conference at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, reporters were shown a minute of footage from the new film, including Bond swinging on a rope after an explosion at an art gallery in Siena, Italy.

Another scene showed him meeting M, played by Dame Judi Dench, outside in the snow.

Kurylenko says she will play a very different Bond girl. She has yet to film any scenes, but is working hard preparing for her role.

???I???m doing weapons training and body flight training for aerial scenes and stunt work for fighting,??? she said. ???My days are so long, and it???s very physical. She???s a fighter. This girl is going to kick ass. She???s on her own mission and she???s driven by revenge.???

Actress Gemma Arterton plays an MI6 agent in the film and has already shot her love scenes with 007. She said, ???I felt like a giggly girl, and I felt so young and inexperienced - but I kissed James Bond!???

The 21-year-old said her Bond role is ???not so frolicksome??? and her character ???fresh and young, not sultry and a femme fatale???.

Quantum of Solace hits theaters on November 7.

  • Cloverfield would have been better set in Los Angeles

    Cloverfield  (2008)

Mr. Los Angeles over at LAist makes a pretty compelling argument that Cloverfield would have been much better had the film been set in Los Angeles.

As Cloverfield set a box office record for a January opening this holiday weekend, we Angelenos should be glad at the local economic boost, but we should also question if it could have been even more successful had the film been set in Los Angeles. Yes, the New York setting drew memories of 9/11 and classic monster movies, but Los Angeles is the city in which this monster would have done so much better – both as a character and as a film. (Note: spoiler alert in generalities.)

Though the two apartments we are shown before the monster's arrival are the thrust of the movement for the main characters, their Midtown and Lower Manhattan locales could have easily been a Los Feliz home (or unit in the Los Feliz Towers) and loft above Pete's at 4th and Main, respectively. This would have set apart the same issues of affluence and distance that separated the film's characters. Those trying to cross the city could still try to use the subways (as was done in the film) to get up to Vermont and Sunset and then walk from there. Imagine emerging where all the two major hospitals once were – and they are completely wiped out?

Also, this monster would more likely come from the Pacific than that Atlantic- making landfall at San Pedro or Westchester and then moving across the City. Either way, there would be major destruction in the lower socio-economic areas of South LA before reaching Downtown or Hollywood. This would illuminate a people that have long struggled to raise their situation in areas like Watts, Morningside Circle, Vermont Knolls, and other South LA neighborhoods. People in these neighborhoods have been fighting each other, to get ahead, and to survive their daily life, and now, they'd have to fight to survive.

Their fight for survival is essential and makes LA a better setting. Unlike Manhattan where a few bridges, tunnels, and ferries can by used as an escape route, there is no way out of LA. This monster in LA has to be fought and brought down - there is no way to evacuate large portions of the City. Freeways will be packed, and people on foot, horseback, and bicycle will have the best (only?) way out. And honestly, nothing stops this beast from traversing the City and the passes into the Valley or along the Arroyo to the San Gabriel Valley. (What a show-down it would be when the military fights it at the Rosebowl!)

Packed freeways, high rises, and urban sprawl make LA a better setting for this film. Maybe in the sequel we'll find L.A. under attack? Who needs plate-tectonics to explain earthquakes; this massive monster has been shaking the earth for years, and now, it's back to take Hollywood by storm (pun intended!).
