I want to like Dan in Real Life. Steve Carell and Dane Cook are two of the most hilarious men out there. And anything with Juliette Binoche pretty much get’s my vote. Yet, here’s the thing. It’s supposed to be a romantic comedy and although it has some funny moments, it doesn’t really deliver on the romantic side. I think that I was missing the magnetic connection between Dan (Carell) and Marie (Binoche) that would have keyed me into believing that these two feel in love over the course of a chance meeting at a bookstore. I believe in love at first site, and it just could have been done better (think Romeo and Juliet). The emotional connection just wasn’t powerful enough to carry the movie and convince the audience that both characters were head-over-heels for the other…justifying all the silliness that ensues. Overall, this film is okay. It’s has the happy ending, but it’s missing a bit in-between.
