    The Dark Knight  (2008)

I can't rave enough about The Dark Night. It plot is pure genius breaking the mold of your typical "super-hero" Hollywood movie. Seriously, every time I thought that I new what was coming around the corner, they took it in a completely different direction. I've been trying to dissect this movie for days and I think that one thing they did really well is setting it in a completely believable cityscape of today, which makes all of the action even more scary and thrilling. Plus Heath Ledger's joker was played as a true terrorist, action with no rules. I think this toys with real feelings and fears that most of us carry in today's post 911-reality.  So go…and make sure to catch this one on the big screen.

    Dan in Real Life  (2007)

I want to like Dan in Real Life. Steve Carell and Dane Cook are two of the most hilarious men out there. And anything with Juliette Binoche pretty much get’s my vote. Yet, here’s the thing. It’s supposed to be a romantic comedy and although it has some funny moments, it doesn’t really deliver on the romantic side. I think that I was missing the magnetic connection between Dan  (Carell) and Marie (Binoche) that would have keyed me into believing that these two feel in love over the course of a chance meeting at a bookstore. I believe in love at first site, and it just could have been done better (think Romeo and Juliet). The emotional connection just wasn’t powerful enough to carry the movie and convince the audience that both characters were head-over-heels for the other…justifying all the silliness that ensues. Overall, this film is okay. It’s has the happy ending, but it’s missing a bit in-between.

  • Wall-e is brilliant!

    Wall-E  (2008)

I loved Wall-e. I mean… it’s a Pixar film! With their series of past successes, it’s hard not to have high expectations for Wall-e and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Wall-e delivers compelling storytelling and beautiful animation. It’s amazing to me how quickly I related to Wall-e, his world, and his emotions towards EVA. The whole concept (not being all that far fetched) of humans literally trashing their planet and having to live elsewhere in space hit home. (Especially, in this era of where we all share a heightened awareness to “go green”.) Little Wall-e is left to clean up our mess. And he does so happily, however, he (like many of us) longs for companionship. That’s where EVA comes in and the story really takes off.
On another note, I left the theater amazed that Pixar mixed live action with animation and that it worked. I’m not sure how, but it wasn’t jarring to see human actors along side of animated characters. That is the brilliance of Pixar. If you’ve not yet seen this film, I’d highly recommend it. It’s a great way to spend a couple hours and to be truly entertained. Enjoy.

    Rescue Dawn  (2007)

I've been thinking about this film for days now. It takes you through the journey of a U.S. fighter pilot, Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale) trying to escape a Vietnam POW camp. The most moving part of this film for me is watching Dieter's amazing resolve to survive against all odds. His positive outlook and ingenuity truly enabled him to plot against his captures. This being based on a true story makes me process this film differently, and ask myself if I could survive in that situation. I’ve struggled with thinking that I’m not sure how I’d handle a similar situation, and I pray that I’ll never have to. It’s a truly great film highlighting the mysterious depths of the human spirit when faced with great challenges. Now I want to watch the documentary on Dieter, “Little Dieter Needs to Fly”, to pay homage to this inspiring man.

  • No Hollywood ending...

    This is England  (2007)

I’m not sure what I think or how I feel about this movie. It’s well done and it certainly sparked a lot of conversation. I guess for me it was hard to watch, as the innocence of a 12-year old boy was lost through the manipulation of those who pull him into the skinhead lifestyle. It’s worth watching, with the disclaimer that there is not neatly packaged “Hollywood” ending.

  • Mixed Emotions

I didn't know much about Roman Polanski before watching this film and it certainly left me with mixed emotions. I was torn between feeling sympathy for the victim as well as feeling poorly for how Roman was treated. I was left thinking that justice wasn't served on either end. This film highlights the theatrics of the judicial system for the sake of pleasing the media. What also struck me that since this film was how it made me think of today's big cases and how courts might be influenced by the press, more worried about the story and the presentation, than the situations of the victims or the defendants. Overall, it’s a good watch and it’ll certainly make you think.
