This movie could have easily dissolved into the kind of sweetly sticky too familiar goo...boy is told he's an orphan, mom and dad go their separate ways, several lies and 11 years later and now they all try to find each other... Even though it relies on some cliche story lines in the telling, it magically comes together with a cast that never stops giving until the last note is played. Definitely worth seeing!

Strangest Cable TV Guide Movie Plot Description Ever...

I normally give the guys over at Cox Communications (or whoever writes these things) the benefit of the doubt for their movie plot descriptions in my on-screen TV guide. It really must be difficult to boil a 2 hour movie plot down to 15 words or less. HOWEVER...I saw one the other day that was not to be believed, so I had to write it down. It's for the 1991 film No Telling:

An organic-farming advocate meets a woman whose husband does weird limb-transplant experiments with animals.

Whaaa??? I really don't know.

I actually went to the theatre for this one...endured the mob of teens and tweens hooking up with their friends via text message until they all found their seats...ack! I was ready for some video-game-esque action - or so I thought - and found myself totally jumping out of my seat with all the flesh-eating gore... my husband got more entertainment out of watching me jump than the movie, I think. God, I'm so embarrassed...

...and I have a little girl-crush on Milla...again...<sigh>

I know, I know...

Normally this is the type of movie I would hate, but I can't help myself. Yes, the premise is entirely idiotic, but by the time Connie and Carla get to the Liza Minelli number in the bar in West Hollywood, I'm hooked.

It also makes me ask the following question: Why are all drag queen movies also road trip/on-the-run movies? Don't know what I'm talking about? Hmmm...let's see...Priscilla, Queen of the Desert...then there's To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar...even Killer Drag Queens on Dope has the running from the bad guys story line. If anyone figures it out, let me know.

For some inexplicable reason I decided to see this movie with a friend the first day it opened in St. Louis. This is the first "horror" movie I've seen in a theatre where the audience actually spent the entire time LAUGHING at the film...

...don't bother with this one...I don't know how de Palma with a cast like this managed to completely destroy the dark mystery that is the Black Dahlia murder. Skip this and watch James Ellroy's Feast of Death instead.

Just to be clear...I'm a Mia Kirshner FANATIC...with the right script she would have completely stolen this. And will someone please tell Josh Hartnett that moody does not have to equal boring! Ugh...he's playing the same character here that he did in Wicker Park.

I was in the lecture hall at Depaul University College of Law in Chicago when Governor Ryan gave the speech depicted in this film. The filmmakers did a remarkable job of telling the story of a group of courageous journalism students who dared to do something about a system so obviously flawed. Highly recommended for all future "world-changers".
