Butterflies

Under discussion:

Please bear with me, as I am a blog virgin.  I am not sure how this is suppose to work, but I am willing to give it a try.  So here goes nothing.

In the Time of the Butterflies  ... this is one film that I wanted to talk about because it really moved me.  In short, it is about a revolution in the DR that was basically started (or at least progressed) by three young sisters.  I first saw this movie as a timid sophmore spanish student at Calvin.  I sat in awe during the whole movie - transfixed by these amazing women.  I felt that I was a part of the story, but then again, this is what every great movie should do for you.  I was overwhelmed by the attitude of the faithful women even in the imminent face of death.  It especially encouraging that these revolutionists were women.  Now don't get me wrong, I am no bra burner - I believe that woman have a place and men have a place.  But these women were strong and persistant in standing up for what they believe, and this should transend gender - then and now.

This is a tragic, but significant movie that all must see.  Every once in a while it is important to be shaken off our pedestal of comfort and remember all that is REALLY going on in our world and what has gone on in our past.

Congratulations on your first post...very nice.

Reading about this film reminded me of another - "Romero" with the late Raul Julia (http://www.spout.com/films/Romero/29445/default.aspx). Although not delving into gender issues, this film confronts many of the same themes - activism, faith and revolution. I saw this film for the first time in graduate school while studying the rise of liberation theology in Latin American during the 70's-80's. It was incredibly moving. Give it a watch sometime.
