In the last month I finished a degree, refinished the hardwood floors, and watched some movies.
In no particular order:
Semi-Pro- this was entertaining and a million times funnier than Blades of Glory. This reminded me of why I loved Anchorman complete immersion in the character and a deluded sense of his own majesty and importance. The scene at the league meeting is gold.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull- A little disappointing, to much CGI and the ride in the fridge was a little much. I felt the films action scenes were a little to familiar.
The 36th Chamber of Shaolin- A classic. My wife has decided to begin to educate herself in the martial arts film genre. A great place to start her training with the ultimate training film.
The Golden Compass- Entertaining, I hope the sequels spend a little less time on exposition.
PTU- Love the To. He makes highly watch-able genre pieces that blend in story elements from some classic films. PTU seems like a cross between Heat and Stray Dog. Simon Yan is really compelling in the movie as the hard nosed officer that understands the streets.
Death at a Funeral- funny at times, sometimes a little overwrought and tired. Enjoyable Sunday brunch movie.
Ronin- A pretty dependable action movie. Reno is likable, the car chases are great, and it was De Niro's last good film before The Good Shepherd.
Flash Point- A okay story but the martial arts are fantastic. Donnie Yen has a lightning fast and furious style that needs to be seen to be believed.
The Strangers- Actually a fairly enjoyable throw back film scary but not grotesque and fascinated by dismemberment. Its all about tension and scares. Definitely a guilty pleasure, I was glad we didn't need to get into the psychology of the killers-you know bad childhood blah blah blah.
Search and Destroy- barely passable Vietnam comes back to haunt some vets in Niagara falls film.
The Glove- great exploitation film. Saxon is king of the voice over here. One of the best theme songs in the history of exploitation films.
Batman Begins- okay but can't wait until the Dark Knight.
Juno- still funny third time around.
The Hottie and the Nottie- payment for my sins I watch movies like these so the customers at the store don't have to. They just need to ask "Is this funny?" and I can honestly say it is total s**t.
The Wind that Shakes the Barley- great movie, subtle and restrained while at the same time presenting a large historical event. Very brief almost to short however it does away with any extraneous information.
The other 25 movies will be in PT. II
