Dan in Real Life (2007) is a romantic comedy that is neither romantic nor funny. The movie plays repeatedly on the key note: Dan fell instantly in love with a woman he met at the book store only to drive to his parents’ coastal mansion and find out that the woman is his brother Mitch’s lover. Then we have Dan trying to act natural around the couple, Dan trying to talk to her about boundaries but she is not concerned, Dan tackling her in a game of family football, Dan’s daughter scolding him for flirting, her impressing everyone and Dan alienating everyone, her leaving Mitch and phoning Dan for a rendezvous, the family walking in on the rendezvous, Mitch slugging Dan, and so on. Nor is this mess romantic. The movie tries to tell us that falling in love instantly—or in three days—is romantic but all we see is three days of family conflict and immaturity. The romance probably happens after the movie ends.
