T-Men
Under discussion:
T-Men
(1947)
T-Men
(1947) is one of the collaborations between director Anthony Mann and cinematographer John Anton. Although the movie has the film noir look, it generates almost no noir excitement because of the narration. The idea, apparently, is to act out a documentary, and to have a narrator explain everything for the education of the general public. The documentary effect starts the film—a Treasury Board executive explains the six investigative branches. Then a narrator takes over to explain how the two agents were selected to infiltrate the counterfeit gang. As soon as excitement starts to build, the narrator explains things. It reminded me of David Mamet’s objection to voice-over narration: In modern screenwriting, it is an up-front admission that you cannot tell the story, that the immense resources of acting, dialogue, and cinematography are not enough.
