Part of the reason for Marlowe’s resistance is his attraction to young Ann Grayle (Anne Shirley). Which brings me to the only significant weakness in the movie. Ann and Marlow fall for each other, but Ann is not Marlowe’s type, we don’t see an attraction build, and, consequently, when the two kiss to finish off the film it seems like a hollow ending. Anne Shirley, in her last role, does not play Ann with the requisite spunk, and the development of the relationship between Ann and Marlowe has been written out of the script. A more enthusiastic actress (maybe difficult?) and a few extra lines (maybe difficult in a jam-packed movie with lots of dialogue already) would have solved the only noteworthy problem in an excellent production.
