Mr Love

Mr. Love (1985). I really liked this film. It’s one of those low-budget, “small” films that feels just right. I liked best the subtle ambiguity. Yes, Donald Lovelace (with the English accents it sounds like Love-less) ventures out of his loveless, sexless marriage to find a variety of female companions at the age of 50, and he develops the reputation of the ultimate ladies’ man, but we never once know for certain if there is any sex going on. Similarly, at the end of the film when the younger woman says she loves him, we’re not sure if this is the “love” Donald has been looking for. First she asks him if he’ll go to London with her to baby-sit her cute little daughter (no response), then if he’ll lend her the money (no response), then she says she loves him (Donald bursts into a huge smile). Hmm? But Donald thinks it is true love, and that is what matters most. Solid acting all around, and a warm interest in a wonderful variety of people. The people who would dislike this movie: Those seeking explosions, terror, violence, graphic sex, etc., and those middle-aged women in loveless, sexless marriages.
