Lucky You  (2007)
Lucky You (2007) is a Janus-faced movie. On one side, it is a romance between a compulsive, professional gambler (Eric Bana) and a naïve young woman who wants to try lounge singing (Drew Barrymore). Will their romance catch fire and do him a world of good, or will it fizzle out as usual? On the other side, it is the 2003 World Series of Poker. What will happen when father (Robert Duval) and his estranged son (Bana) meet in the Series? This creates a movie that is about half an hour too long (2 hrs 4 min). More importantly, the audience that will like the sweet romance is probably quite different from the one that will be captivated by various hands of Texas Hold ‘Em. Put another way, many people can empathize with a young woman who hopes that her goodness will change a ne’er do well, and, although some people might find Bana’s character unsympathetic, a lot of people can hope for a young man’s moral redemption. But relatively few viewers can get excited when the dealer turns up an eight of spades as the “river.”
