  • See It For Jessica And Tommy's Performances

    Blue Sky  (1994)

While not the best told story ever created, it's the acting that should draw you into this film. I've never seen Tommy Lee Jones more restrained - you expect him to go into one of his famous southern-tinged monologues, but he stays properly restrained throughout nearly the entire film. Jessica Lange, who won the 1995 Best Actress Oscar for this role, is a joy to watch here, as she can go from raging to laughing in an instant, and is totally believable the entire time. Some of the plot machinations get a little far-fetched, as we've seen this type of story beaten to death and done much better, but it provides the backdrop for these two award winning actors to show their stuff. Powers Booth is always good as the sleazy bad guy type, and here he's no exception. Even though he's not near the caliber an actor as Jessica and Tommy, he plays his role with enough of a sneer to make it believable. Oh yeah, Chris O'Donnell is in the movie, too. Whoopie.

  • One Of Post WWII's Best

This is a brashly realistic film examining the manner in which WWII veterans were treated when they returned home. It's especially bold for a film that came out in the mid-40's to take such a honest look at the way our government, work force, and the general public seemed to chew up these young (and old) men alike and spit them back out. What's especially striking is Harold Russell's performance - he's a real veteran of the war with a disability that would be devastating to most people, and even though they explore his difficulties settling back into everyday life, he seems to have things well under control. I could have done without the longing romance between Peggy and Fred, but Teresa Wright is pretty enough to suspend my disbelief long enough to understand how Dana Andrews could fall for her. All in all, a good film to see if you're the sort of anti-war type...and even better still to see if you are pro-war (because maybe then you'll begin to understand...bah...enough...)
