Wow. I've read several reviews about this film, and I'm still on the fence about it. Jack Nicholson is good as usual, and the supporting cast (particularly Harry Dean Stanton) are believable as well. What really stands out, though, is Marlon Brando's performance. When he first appears on screen, I thought "what's the big deal? He's got a thick accent. Whoop-de-doo." Then he loses the accent altogether. Hmmm, interesting choice. Then I noticed his outfits. And the hats. And the actual dialogue coming out of his mouth. I could imagine everyone involved wondering why was Brando attempting to ruin all of their careers? I'm sure it took a great deal of deft editing to put together a cohesive performance with what Brando gave them. Then again, I could be wrong - they could have all been having a great laugh and believing what they were doing was going to be considered great art for decades to come. But I doubt it.
