    Buffalo '66  (1998)

I LOVE how dry the humor is in this film. To tell you the truth, I didn't even realize it WAS a comedy the first time I saw it - I just thought it was weird. The film plays like Gallo's character Billy is telling it to someone, and this is what it looks like in THEIR head - everything is exaggerated and surreal. It is in turns heartbreaking and laugh out loud funny, and Gallo has shot up my "favorites" list immediately. Ben Gazzara and Anjelica Huston turn in fine performances (they were robbed by not even being considered for Oscar nominations, in my opinion) and Christina Ricci has never looked better as a blonde than she does in this film. Highly recommended, especially for the Wes Anderson-loving crowd.

    That Darn Cat  (1996)

Yikes. Some films should never be made. This is one of them. About as entertaining as watching a cat fill up it's liter box. Burn the negatives, Disney!

    Casper  (1995)

Ah...1995. I remember seeing Christina Ricci's interview on The Jon Stewart Show (post-MTV, pre-Daily Show) while she was plugging this pic and being absolutely enamored with this wonderfully witty, young actress. I was bound and determined to go see this in the theater, as the last film I'd seen her in was Addams Family Values, which she also shined in, two years prior. Then I took my first trip to Los Angeles, where I saw her white dress from this film at Universal Studios and got to meet Cathy Moriarty at her pizza shop in Beverly Hills...good times. OK, enough ruminating! This film heralded in the CGI era, and I suppose it does a nice job with all it's special effects. Bill Pullman is properly comedic as Ricci's father, and Moriarty is an eerie Cruella De Vil clone (and that's a compliment). The story looses steam after Casper turns into Devon Sawa, but it's not a bad film for tykes AND Ricci-lovers the same.
