  • When The Plane Lands, So Should've The Film

    Red Eye  (2005)

This movie is split into two halves. The first half is a great film, suspenseful and taut with surprises. Rachel McAdams is fantastic to watch, and the sexual energy between her and Cillian Murphy is great. And then he turns evil, and the film is still pretty good, even if it is rather far-fetched. Then you've got the second half - and it's all downhill, all horror movie cliches and ridiculous dialogue. A promising beginning, and a huge let down at the end.

    The Barber  (2001)

Looking over Malcolm McDowell's filmography, I find myself shocked that he works as often as he does; I guess I only notice him in cameos and bit parts. I've seen this film on the shelves of my local Family Video for years, and when another local Hollywood Video went out of business, I picked this up for fifty cents. This straight-to-video film isn't the best McDowell's ever done, but the best in recent years. And for straight-to-video, it's not too bad. The only things that bothered me were some of the moments felt a little forced, like when McDowell is helping a woman with her Christmas tree while spewing exposition up the wazoo. The ending left a little to be desired, as it seemed rushed and out-of-place. Some of the various policemen's lines were cliche, and everything seemed a little too "smokey" for my tastes, but for the most part, not a bad low budget film. If you are a fan of McDowell's, don't pass this one up - it's one of his better performances in recent years.

  • Cheesy 70's Low Budget Sci-Fi Adventure

There's this new show on The Cartoon Network, I can't recall the name at the moment, but it's a great piece of comedy that pokes fun at the late 70's, early 80's attempts at a TV hospital drama. I'd love to see what they do to this film, but there really is no need, as this film is as campy as they come. It's truly everything you read about from this era - guys in puffy latex dinosaur costumes, terrible lighting, wooden acting, etc. Peter Cushing must've known he was making a stinker, as he seems to be hamming it up for all it's worth, and ultimately becomes one of the most entertaining things about this film. I can't help but think of Phil Hartman (R.I.P. dear sir) when I hear the name Doug McClure, who made me laugh throughout this film merely because of the Simpson reference. This is one of those "so bad, they're good" films, but generally, I do not care for these films, thus the "lost interest" rating. But YOU may like it...
