Edward Scissorhands (1990)

By this time, I was a Tim Burton fan for life. He'd already romanced me with Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice and Batman. He could do no wrong in my book. And here, he didn't disappoint. Not enough superlatives in the English language to describe my adoration of Tim Burton at this point. Thanks, Tim!

Batman (1989)

You could argue that Batman Begins, directed by Christopher Nolan (a fantastic director, by the way) is a better film, and I would have to agree that it is a better made film, but this is one of the best comic book adaptations I've ever seen. Spiderman, eat your heart out. I prefer this one for several reasons. 1) Jack Nicholson. 2) Tim Burton. 3) NO KATIE HOLMES. Tim Burton really hit the nail on the head, from the gothic look of the film to the somber tone. Speaking of Nicholson, I'm curious to see Heath Ledger's Joker in the new Batman movie...

Beetlejuice (1988)

I've seen this film countless times...and it never gets old. I love this film like it was a child of mine. I read that Warner Bros execs were worried about the title of the film, and as a joke, Tim Burton told them he was considering titling the film "Scared Sheetless". They thought it was a brilliant idea. Tim Burton was mortified. The rest is history.

Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (1985)

Tim Burton's debut film...and a fantastic vehicle for Pee-Wee, nee Paul Reubens, this was a childhood favorite and, in my formative years of learning to play piano, a seminal theme by Danny Elfman (of Oingo-Boingo fame). Quirky, silly and sweet...I think if you give this a chance, you'll like it.

Jackie Brown (1997)

Initially underrated, I think in some ways, this film outshines Tarantino's previous two films. He's getting used to being a "director" and it shows - the story and characters have a warmth missing in the first two films. But it's hard for me to judge which I like best (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction or Jackie Brown). In my opinion, they all go hand in hand. Needless to say, my expectations for Kill Bill were high...too high...

Tarantino's Masterpiece

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Quentin Tarantino really hit his stride with Pulp Fiction...and in my opinion, he's yet to better himself (although I think he did a nice follow up with Jackie Brown...you are free to disagree). All the accolades I could heap on this film have all been said before...so just do yourself a favor and see it if you haven't already.
