    Fire in the Sky  (1993)

When I saw this in the theater back in 1993, I was hoping for a sci-fi flick full of aliens and awesome SFX, so when I got to the halfway mark, I figured this was a dramatic representation of events that may or may not have happened. And I was cool with it, because the story kept gaining momentum and the pace was quickening, and it started to look like maybe they DID murder their friend...hmmm...intriguing. ***SPOILER ALERT*** Then the flashback scene happens, and it TOTALLY took me by surprise. It was incredibly effective, and I think I even went with a group of other friends to see it in the theater AGAIN. I was SO glad when it FINALLY came out on DVD in 2004, because the VHS version was a crappy full-screen transfer. Now, I can't wait for a HD DVD or Blu Ray version, because the DVD transfer looks kinda crappy on a HDTV. Oh well...at least it's on DVD at all, I suppose.

This is what started it all. I made the mistake of having a Saturday night off one week in 1993, and happened to catch this on TV. I've been hooked ever since. But darn it if the writing and the characters don't keep you interested and wanting to keep up week after week. In my defense, this DID win a crapload of Emmys, and admittedly, the last few seasons really got convoluted and cliched, and I stopped watching the show altogether. But definitely the first few seasons are worth a  watch if you're interested in what was going on in TV-Land in 1993.

    Dark City  (1998)

The pacing is so slow on this film, I can honestly say in the handful of times that I've watched (including it's theatrical run), I've only seen the ending once. If I have insomnia, this is the film I pop in. I don't know why, but I fall asleep EVERY TIME I see this film. Don't get me wrong, the story is fascinating and the cinematography is wonderfully dark, I just can't keep my eyes open long enough to finish the damn thing in one sitting.

  • What A Great Title For A Film

Apart from the ending, which on first viewing seemed a little tacked on, now feels like the only way this great little film could end. The performances are endearing and the story line captivating, and the animated sequences, again at first viewing seeming jarring and unnecessary, now feel exactly how a teenager deals with tough emotions (or at least, how I dealt with them - by putting pen to paper and creating something). It's an indie film, and while that's a detriment to some, I find these film driven by character, and this one's got plenty of it.

  • A Masterpiece Of A Directorial Debut

It's unbelievable that this is Kevin Costner's directorial debut. It's made with such care and pathos, and the pacing is indicative of one of the masters of film, you'd never guess this was a first time director in the director's chair. I tend to categorize this in the "Anti-Western" file, as the Indians are shown as the "good guys" rather than the "cowboys", which I believe is closer to the truth than the early years of the Western genre. A fine film from beginning to end.

I got a VHS tape of this in the 99 cent bin at a video store back in 1989 and, coupled with Nickelodeon's "The Mysterious Cities of Gold", this was my first foray into the world of Anime. More versed individuals may think this is too slow and a terrible translation, and they'd be partly right. The story moves VERY slow, but I think that's why I liked it back then - I wanted to know what happened to Jiro, and the story is seeped in Japan's real-life history, which was endlessly fascinating to me, and still is. It has now come out on DVD in it's true form, "The Dagger of Kamui" and is infinitely better. It's in Japanese, subtitled in English, and some of the more racy "cut" scenes have been added back into it. Sure, there's more entertaining Anime out there, but this was the first one I ever saw and for that, it holds a special place in history for me.
