    Besieged  (1998)

This film is as layered as they come. It's one of those films that will take multiple viewings to truly appreciate and begin to comprehend. I would almost consider it a silent movie, as there is very sparse dialogue and music sets the tone for a lot of the plot points, for instance, Mr. Kinsky creating more rhythm-based music to please his love, Shandurai. Roger Ebert dismisses it as a white man's wet dream, to make love to a beautiful black woman, and although I see the argument in that statement, I believe it is wrong. I think it is the MORAL choices that need to be focused on. Just imagine, what if it were a white woman or a black man in the roles? It would have still been filmed with Bertolucci's signature sensuality (see Last Tango In Paris or The Dreamers). So I, for one, thought that this was a beautifully lyrical film that many critics just didn't "get". Too bad for them.

  • What? No "Fight For Your Right"?!?!

I've liked the Beastie Boys since I saw the video for "Fight For Your Right", which is unforgivably absent here. Sure, it's a shitty video, but it was what got them their start as the Kings of the MTV generation. So, I would've rated this as "I Liked It", but like I said, I cannot forgive Criterion for deleting this seminal video. Other than that, there's everything you'd never want and more included here...and it's one of Criterion's less costly DVD releases, so I'd say if you're a fan, pick it up, you won't be disappointed - unless you're hoping to watch "Fight For Your Right".

    Deathtrap  (1982)

Not a bad premise. The Movie Guide review below pretty much says it all. You'll either love this film because of it's "talkie-ness" or you'll totally hate it. I'm a stage actor a lot of the time, and I could see this film being a great play, so I loved it. The ending was a little groan-worthy, but other than that, fine acting throughout and fun cinematography and editing.

    Starman  (1984)

I remember my mom absolutely falling in love with this film, so naturally, the whole family fell in love with it, too (my dad loved to make VHS compilations from LaserDisk rentals). I've watched this a hundred times, and I'm so glad it's now on DVD - it looks better than ever in it's widescreen transfer. I would categorize this as a sci-fi romance from the king of horror, so if that's you bag - give this one a try!

  • A Fun Outing From Allen, Penn & Co.

Having seen only a handful of Woody Allen's films before I hit my late 20's, I'm more and more impressed with each new Allen film I watch, and this is no exception. Sean Penn is funny as hell (if a bit over the top), and Allen's script is tight and sharp in a wink-wink sort of way. Definitely see it if you fancy yourself a musician (but one gripe - it's WAY obvious that Penn is NOT playing the guitar in the close ups).

    Suspect Zero  (2004)

It's not a perfect film by any means, and I'm not really a fan of Aaron Eckhart (I think he's a bit full of himself), but Ben Kingsley is the man, and it's always fun to see the man who brought such warmth to "Gandhi" relish being the bad guy once in a while. What made me want to see the film is the wealth of previews on all of the Paramount DVDs released around this time. Not a bad way to get your films seen, especially when they're worth a viewing, like this one!
