  • WTF, Spielberg?

    Amistad  (1997)

Very torn about this film. I think the power of the story is undeniable, but Steven Spielberg's direction is maudlin and oversentamentalized, which takes away the power of the statement. The best moment of this film is Anthony Hopkins' 10 minute monologue, which is truly inspired, the worst is Anna Paquin's terrible Spanish accent. I found John Williams' score distracting at times, particularly the French Horns (don't get me wrong, I love French Horns) that would be playing underneath some important exposition. Cinque's backflash of his journey to America is horrifying, much like Schindler's List, but those moments are few and far between. And could Morgan Freeman be more underutilized? Sheesh! A big, fat Hollywood movie that should have been lean and mean.

    American Psycho  (2000)

It's quite obvious that Bret Easton-Ellis (author of the book that this film is based on) hated the 80's, and, having grown up in the 80's myself, it's easy to see why - it was an era of the yuppie: rich, egotistical and materialistic. This is a black comedy for those who are confused, and one of the darkest comedies I have every seen. Christian Bale's performance is Oscar-worthy, and I don't know why he wasn't even considered. His character of Patrick Bateman is a complex one, simultaneously mockingly self-centered and maniacally homicidal. The range of emotions on his face in any given scene is transfixing, and one can see why he is touted as the next "De Niro" or "Brando". A fine, fine film, but keep in mind...it's supposed to be funny (at times). Watch it!

  • Great Film...But A Bit "Wordy"

    Another Woman  (1988)

I keep reading that this film is "Bergman-esque". Unfortunately, I have yet to see an Ingmar Bergman film. As such, this film plays like a book reads - it's very lyrical and wordy, but rightly so. The characters are all sophisticated and upper-class and filled with middle-aged angst. Very interesting stuff. In a nutshell, I would say this film is like viewing someone's imagination while reading another person's diary. Once again, Woody Allen scores!

  • There Are Better Vincent Price Movies Out There

    Twice Told Tales  (1963)

As of this review, this is my least favorite Vincent Price film. I've never been a fan of Nathaniel Hawthorn's writings, and this is a mishmash of three of his short stories (Dr. Heidegger's Experiment, Rappaccini's Daughter & The House of Seven Gables). The last third of this film I was particularly unimpressed with as I could barely sit still long enough to finish the film. I don't know, maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a low-budget 60's "horror" film today.

  • I Can At Least Say I "Saw" It...

    Saw  (2004)

I remember when this came out, everyone was freaking out about how scary and "good" this film was. So when it came out on DVD, I rented it. Sure, the ending catches you off guard - the first time you see it. On this, my second viewing, I was thoroughly unimpressed with this film. Sorry, folks - I just don't see how this could warrent three sequels (which I haven't seen). It's slightly remeniscent of better films (Seven comes to mind). Not my cup of tea, but for the gorehound-crowd, possibly a milestone...?

    Pan's Labyrinth  (2006)

I feel conflicted about this film. I definitely have to watch this again. On the surface, it seems like a very well done fantasy film, but there is so much underlying subtext that I didn't quite catch it all the first time. I'm curious to see "The Lives Of Others" (the Best Foreign Picture Oscar Winner that beat Pan's Labyrinth this year) as I thought Pan's Labyrinth was a shoe-in to win.
