    Under discussion:

    Dead Ringers  (1988)

    The Fly  (1986)

    Naked Lunch  (1991)

    Videodrome  (1982)

    Rabid  (1977)

Aside from laughably horrible acting and low budget production values, this is actually a pretty decent horror concept. An early effort from David Crononberg that echoes a lot of his recurring themes, disquieting bodily transformations, disease and societal breakdown.

A young woman undergoes "radical plastic surgery techniques" and as a side effect ends up growing a strange little bloodsucking orifice in her armpit. This portion of the story is less interesting than the side effect of her 'victims' who get a rabies-like disease that causes them to go on murderous rampages and as a result martial law is declared and the victims are shot down in the street. Similar in many ways to 'Night of the Living Dead', and while there are certain scenes will provoke laughter and disbelief, there are also some very effective suspense scenes, and the final shot with the garbage truck is quite memorable. Better than I was expecting, but not by much.

Cronenberg is not my favorite director by any means (didn't really care for "A History of Violence", and "Crash" didn't do much for me), but I do respect that fact that he seems to have a definite viewpoint and style. I sometimes like what he does, and other times I'm under-impressed. Some of the better ones: Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, Videodrome, The Fly
