    Repulsion  (1965)

    The Others  (2001)

    Dark Water  (2002)

Caught this one on Sundance the other afternoon after work purely by chance. I'm not a very big 'horror' fan, and I'm sure this would disappoint the 'blood and guts' crowd. I like a movie that can get under your skin with a suggestion of terror rather than the full fledged hatchet to the forehead. Creepy and atmospheric, with some great soundtrack music and sound effects which squeezes a lot of mileage out of a drippy spot on the ceiling and a child's little red plastic purse.

I haven't seen the remake that came out this past summer, but I heard it was pretty soggy (don't you love movies that write their own reviews? - "all wet", "all washed up", "limp as a wet dishrag"). Other recommendations of good creepy psychological thrillers: Repulsion, The Others, Eraserhead, The Haunting, Rosemary's Baby

    The Insider  (1999)

    Traffic  (2000)

This one came out of nowhere and sideswiped us. Had heard a little buzz about it, and rented it with little or no idea of what it was about. What a smart, funny, engaging and thought provoking film. A great performance by Aaron Eckhart who gets around a character with obvious barriers to public acceptance and actually gets you in his corner and rooting for him with no apologies.  Was expecting more of a 'expose of big tobacco' like the heavy handed 'The Insider', or even 'Traffic' (for the drug trade), but instead of pat answers and forgone conclusions (I love the scene where he turns to the audience at the subcommittee and asks if there is anyone in the room who doesn't know that smoking causes cancer), the movie allows for an intelligent audience to find their own way through the smoke (pardon the pun).

Nice supporting cast, including Robert Duvall and Sam Elliott.

    Hombre  (1967)

    Mr. Majestyk  (1974)

    Get Shorty  (1995)

    Jackie Brown  (1997)

    Out of Sight  (1998)

    The Beach  (2000)

    The Black Dahlia  (2006)

Been a big Elmore Leonard fan for a while, and had read the book this was based on when it was first released. At the time, I really felt that this would make a great movie, but when the movie came out, I was initially disappointed in the casting, and on the first viewing in '98 I was underimpressed. Not really fair to the movie, as I have a tendency to get disappointed in most adaptations that I grow attached to beforehand. I felt Jenifer Lopez was a bad choice for the female lead, and overall, the great story got back seat to the romance angle.

Recently got a chance to revisit this one and it has gotten better with distance. A lot of casting in the minor roles is brilliant, from Don Cheadle to Catherine Keener to Luiz Guzman to Ving Rhames, to Michael Keaton (actually playing the same character he played in another Leonard adaptation, Jackie Brown), and an absolutely hilarious Steve Zahn. The direction and screenplay are crisp and snappy and moves along at a nice pace, employing some nice back and forth timelines seamlessly.

Sometimes its a bad idea to get too attached to a book and expect too much from the film version. Happens with me too often. I had a similar experience with LA Confidential and more recently The Black Dahlia (both books I thought would make absolutely fabulous films) . . . All the Pretty Horses and The Beach also come to mind.

Leonard has has a pretty good track record for adaptations, especially lately. Other recomendations. Get Shorty, Jackie Brown, Mr. Majestyk, Hombre
