    The Ref  (1994)

I’m willing to bet that a vast majority have never even heard of The Ref. It’s another Christmas movie (yes…I’m obsessed), and it is f-u-n-n-y. Denis Leary is at his best as the exasperated thief. Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis are brilliant as a bickering couple. There is some great commentary & insight into the human condition. In other words, it makes you think and laugh at the same time. That’s a good combo in my universe. Leary’s bumbling partner in crime is played by the same guy that played Al Neri in The Godfather trilogy.

Who among us hasn’t wanted to skip a day of school or work? Ok…it’s probably safe to say that at some point most of us have actually played hooky. But nobody has ever done it with quite as much panache as Ferris Bueller.

I’m referring specifically to the 1947 B&W original, not the 1994 remake (although as far as remakes go it was a pretty decent flick). Any movie centered around Santa Claus and that also criticizes the commercialization of Christmas is okay with me.

    Scent of a Woman  (1992)

Hands down Pacino’s best performance. He takes this movie and carries it on his back, creating one of the great characters in the last two decades in Col. Frank Slade. Yes The Godfather flicks are better overall films, but there was a dream supporting cast. Pacino makes this movie good all by his powerful self (no offense to Chris O’Donnell or Phillip Seymour Hoffman). His soliloquy near the end of the film is excellent.

    Jerry Maguire  (1996)

A sports movie with a heart. Probably Cruise’s finest performance (before he became a religious whack job and abducted sweet lil Katie Holmes). I’m a sports nut, so the framework of the film was appealing, and the cameos were a nice touch. The kid is freakin’ adorable. Renee Zellweger has never been more appealing. This movie had me at hello…..but I won’t go so far as to say it completes me.

    Best in Show  (2000)

I really dig the Christopher Guest mockumentaries, most of which feature many of the same group of actors. This one is one of the best. The commentator played by Fred Willard is hysterical.
