The Wedding Singer (1997)

The 80’s are now fodder for retro themes. Other than the fact that it makes me feel old, it also makes me laugh. The in jokes and references are right on the money and the music brings back memories. I wonder if they’ll do a sequel set in the 90’s sometime soon?

The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005)

I love this movie. These “Frat Pack” films are extremely well written & witty, and the actors are top notch. Paul Rudd has a supporting role as a smartass that is tremendous.

The Big Chill (1983)

A big screen pre-cursor to Thirtysomething. Angst apparently doesn’t end after high school, giving us all something to look forward to. I need to watch this movie again soon, as I am now in the age range of the characters in the film and have been wanting to get together with old college friends.

Back to the Future Part II (1989)

Picks up exactly where the first movie left off. Sequels as a general rule don’t live up to the original, but nevertheless this is a good movie and can be enjoyed along with the original.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

Will Ferrell is downright funny in almost anything. In this one he’s a full of himself newsman with a retro vibe. The jokes are silly and aren’t meant as any kind of sarcastic commentary on anything. They’re just plain juvenile and funny. I appreciate smartly written scripts, but occasionally mindless fun is needed. Pretty darn near the entire Frat Pack makes an appearance, and that’s a good thing. Special honorable mention goes to Paul Rudd who is fast becoming one of my favorite character actors.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Heartwarming sci-fi. That’s not a combo one sees often. After 25 years this still stands out as one of Spielberg’s best. And it made the Reese’s Pieces people a ton of cash.
