  • The Perfect swan song for Eastwood

    Gran Torino  (2008)

Its the end of an era, not just for the main character in this film, but for its star and director as well. Clint Eastwood’s latest project to come to DVD, Gran Torino is about the twilight of a man’s life and his inability to deal with the changes that time brings. The same holds true for Hollywood perpetual fixture Clint Eastwood, as this is the last time we will purportedly see him in front of the camera, and this film is his final bow as an actor. Somehow me thinks we’ll see him in a smaller role somewhere to fulfill some itch down the road. The body of work Eastwood has been producing this decade is of mixed results, from the awful Bloodwork to the Oscar winning Million Dollar Baby, this drama is the perfect sendoff for Clint. Much of his work is typically heavy hitting drama, Gran Torino is no exception to that but there’s plenty of funny stuff to keep things light.  I hate to say it, but Eastwood has become an old codger, and what a better role for him than to play an old codger. Think of it as Dirty Harry retires and moves to Detroit, because beating up gangbangers is a fun way to pass the time. I found it quite enjoyable and charming to watch, even though the subject matter is dark.

    Inkheart  (2009)

    See my full post here.

Although Fraser’s performance isn’t entirely to blame,  it will throw it in the lap of the director. Inkheart just seemed to lack some punch. Maybe it could have taken on a better comedic angle, or the characters could have been fleshed out more. What could have been a lighthearted concept becomes a darker movie and sadly a predictable one. Maybe it was intentional, because its based on a mediocre novel who have a tendency to be stock and predictable. Oh look, there’s that bad guy again trying to take over the world only to be thwarted by the good guys in the nick of time.  The jokes were typically lame, it just had this Hollywood schlocky feel to it that infects a lot of movies these days.

  • Thanks a lot Spielberg and Lucas

What the hell. Why do George Lucas and Spielberg insist on destroying great movie franchises from my childhood years? I saw this film last night and was disappointed. I thought it was cheesey and the story line did not fit into the Indy mythos (Aliens? Lame!).  There were too many references to other films (even Star Wars!), and there was too much time spent winking at the camera. The supporting characters were fairly weak, and some of the situations were almost a repeat of earlier films stunts. I did like the beginning sequence at Area 51, but it went downhill from there. It seemed the rust was hard to shake off there for Harrison. He seemed uncomfortable back in the role, and much of the humor from earlier movies just didn't stick with me. His relationship with Ravenwood seemed too lovey dovey, even though he hasn't seen here in years. Bah, I could go on but thinking about this film just makes me angry. I think I'll go watch Raiders again to calm myself down.

  • Excellent modern fantasy film.

The current trend in the past couple of years has seen the release schedule filled with movie adaptations of children’s fantasy novels. From the superb films from the likes of authors J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis these successful adaptations have opened the flood gates in this genre and it seems Hollywood is hell bent clearing the shelves at the local Borders for more script material.I was fully expecting The Spiderwick Chronicles to be another mediocre entry into this genre, but found myself to be really enjoying this movie. Yes its a typical childhood fantasy film, but it stands a bit apart from others like Chronicles of Narnia as it is set in our modern world (and not in Europe either) and retains its sense of wonder and magic. Fool's Gold  (2008)

I thought this would have been a good comedy adventure romp on the same vein as Romancing The Stone. Unfortunately is missed the mark by a mile. It was formulaic, irritating at times and another film for Matthew McConaughey to showcase his bare chest. Dude, we get it. You work out. Do you have to do this for every film?

  • Excellent film from a unique perspective

Overall, I have to say this is a wonderful film that should be seen. Do not let the subtitles scare you off (it is in French), there is no language barrier here. After viewing this film, it will make you think about life and how to live it to the fullest because you never know whats around the corner.

    Mama's Boy  (2007)

Ugh, what a tedious 'comedy' to slog through. What happened here? How was this film released? Its terrible and for a comedy its not funny..at all.

  • Jumper? Meh.

    Jumper  (2008)

What the hell is this jumbled mess? I thought this movie was a disappointment, from the disjointed writing and poor acting. Hayden Christensen proves once again he cannot act his way out of a paper bag. Show some emotional range man! Samuel L Jackson looks goofy in the white fro, and doesn't add much weight to the story either, seems kind of wasted here. Would have liked a better backstory on why this movie is happening.

Doug Liman does have the knack for good action scenes though, those parts are what kept my interest.

    The Bucket List  (2007)

You can read my complete thoughts here on my blog . I do have to say I was greatly entertained by these two legendary actors. Rob Riener manages to make me laugh and cry all at the same time. A bit sappy? Maybe, but the character dynamic is what makes this film a good one. Not Oscar worthy or anything but a good pop corn flick.
