  • SHARK'S CAVE!

    Under discussion:

This is really wild. It’s an Italian/Spanish adventure/crime/supernatural/shark movie with bloody violence and ambiguity to spare! Andres is found alive after having disappeared six months before and presumed dead. He has no recollection of where he has been or how he survived all that time. Meanwhile, a plane has crashed off the coast (The Bermuda Triangle!) and bad-guy extraordinaire Kennedy wants something retrieved from the wreckage; Andres is whom he hires to do the job. The plane is very near a cave of sharks that sit quietly watching, like guardians, at the entrance to… ???? Things become extremely complicated at this point and a cohesive synopsis becomes challenging at best! There is some insane stuff happening in this movie and you’ll even be treated to a little gory carnage courtesy of those awesome underwater predators of the title! The distractingly beautiful Cinzia Monreale does appear (very briefly) in a scene that… Well, the whole thing is just damn strange, that’s all! You’ll have to experience this atmospheric movie for yourself to really appreciate it! Soundtrack perfection is achieved thanks to the talents of Stelvio Cipriani! A very unique and unexpected film!

  • SHATTERER - Uncut & Widescreen Italian/Japanese Crime film!

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Directed by Tonino Valerii (but not listed on SPOUT!)

This one was written by Tonino Valerii and Eernesto Gastaldi and features cameos by Dalila Di Lazzaro and Toshiro Mifune (!!). A Japanese auto production company opens up in Sicily and, for numerous reasons, the Mafia becomes markedly displeased by this. At first workers are attacked, some needing hospitalization, but eventually lives are lost as the bosses push even harder to make their intentions as obvious as possible. When all those attacks fail, they kidnap one of the car company’s top executives and, in a genuinely disturbing moment, slice his ear off to send as a message. This warning will only be the beginning; if the Japanese don’t clear out of Sicily within 72 hours the executive will be sent back as a jigsaw puzzle! An American private detective and a Japanese rally car driver (whose best friend and new wife were blown up in their car moments after leaving the church where the marriage had just taken place) are brought in by the insurance company to try rescuing the hostage. The violence continues but the criminals didn’t count on having to deal with the likes of Victor and Koichi! Beautiful locations and a unique vibe are among the highlights in this ambitious (and very rare) Italian/Japanese gangster movie. Shatterer is filled with intrigue, fist fights, car chases, a cool (and shockingly violent – F/X by Rosario Prestopino) climax, and just enough exploitation/pulp thrown in to make it stand out from the pack!

  • SHOCKING DARK - Uncut & Widescreen Scifi! Cheesy Aliens/Terminator Clone!

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Directed by Bruno Mattei (but not listed on Spout!)

Only in Italy! It’s the future, and Venice has become a toxic tomb. A specialized military unit is sent into the underground tunnels of the city on a mission called Operation Delta Venice to find any survivors. Any remaining people must be rescued and evacuated before falling victim to the poisons in the air, or the vicious monsters that now run rampant beneath the city. Most of the movie is a direct steal of Aliens (and Terminator towards the end), so don’t expect to see this getting a release anytime soon. Grab a cheese sandwich and let yourself go!

  • THE SICILIAN BOSS - Very rare and excellent Umberto Lenzi Italian Crime film UNCUT!

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

Directed by Umberto Lenzi (but not listed on Spout!)

Umberto Lenzi directs this incredible crime film with nonstop action and his incredible talent for pessimistic cinema. Maurizio Merli stars as Lieutenant Berni, who is in charge of transporting a mafia criminal and key witness to New York in order to finger the Sicilian Boss for murder and have him expedited back to Italy. It won't be easy! Merli can't trust anyone as the local mob tries to beat him to Rome and kill them both! One attack after another as they go from claustrophobic car chases to snipers, to trains and even the airport! And that's just the beginning! New York is even worse! Some incredible twists, great characterization and even a sexy love interest with the beautiful Laura Belli! This is what Italian Crime Cinema is all about! Let's not forget the incredible jazzy score by Franco Micalizzi!

  • THE SICILIAN CONNECTION - Finally UNCUT!

    Pizza Connection  (1985)

Mario has lived in America for many years, but now ‘the family’ needs him to return to Palermo so he can help settle some pressing business, some very pressing business. Things are much more complicated back home than Mario ever thought they would be and it’s due in large part to his younger brother Michele. Still, there are things that need to be done and, one way or another, these kinds of problems always get handled. This is just about as good as an Italian crime drama gets so fans of this style of movie who haven’t yet seen it are doing themselves a tremendous injustice! Mesmerizing from the first frames, The Sicilian Connection is nearly two full hours of overwhelmingly powerful action, violence, and brutality! A tragic morality play that is as gritty as it is passionate. Do not miss this one!

  • SILENT ACTION - Sergio Martino Italian Crime - Uncut and Widescreen!

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

This is a mix of the crime and action genres that even manages to work a little gialli flavor into the formula. A number of important people have been turning up dead (one of the early murders is a splashy decapitation on a railway) and Luc Merenda is the investigator in charge of finding out why. The more he digs the more frightening the truth becomes, but knowledge sometimes comes with a very high price. Massive action scenes highlight this slightly paranoid and cynical story about political terrorism and a seemingly unstoppable phantom organization. And what a climax! It’s a very rare but exceptional film!
