  • Do You Ever Fantasize About the Big Score?

    Confidence  (2003)

I am always drawn to movies where people are looking for that final piece before retiring because it heightens the drama of the crime being commited.  I also like crime movies that feature the criminal's perspective because it's interesting to try and think out what you'd do in the same situation.  This movie is very well done and if you can think ahead of this one, then maybe you really could pull off the final score.  There are a lot of twists and turns in this film. Part pulp fiction part Soprano's, but 100% con job.

    Mystery Men  (1999)

I hate it when I get films that have absolutely no redeeming qualities.  Mystery Men features an all-star gen x ensamble cast in some truly terrible roles.  I thought it would at least be funny, but the humor lacks any sort of depth.  Now I like the three stooges as much as anyone, but this movie makes even them look sensical.  Frankly this one should be buried in the vault of shame along with Bill Cosby's Meteor Man.

    Body Heat  (1981)

Netflix reccomended this one to me and I thought that it would be good with Kathleen Turner in it, but it feel short of cinema great.  Turner plays a character who is always in control.  She did an excellent job with her role, but the plot was a little too obvious and I didn't feel sense good chemistry with her co-star William Hurt.

    Papillon  (1973)

Now I don't normally go for dramas because I prefer the more light hearted stuff, but this was a good movie from the early 70's.  It feature Steve McQueen who is desperate to escape from prison.  McQueen is tough as nails and is a natural born leader, but gets ripped off more then once trying to escape.  As punishment he ends up spending 7 years in solitary confinement and is forced to survive on bugs.  The entire movie did a good job of showing how tough it really would be to spend your whole life in prison.  With the entire movie focused on escape, you can't help but expect some huge uplifting moment, but the film ends with too many unanswered questions.

  • Are You a Sucker For Franchises Too?

    Halloween  (1978)

Ever since I've had my Netflix membership, it's been pretty amazing to see how many great movies there are that I've never seen.  I hate having to pick from favorites so I randomize my 500 maximum Netflix queue and get ready to be surprised.  After randomizing I pick out the first franchise and set it up so I get one new one each week.  The first time I tried this was with Jaws and learned that four times in a row is too much of the same movie.

Lately I've been on the Halloween franchise.  So far I've seen all but the last one and found several of the films to be very good, but watch out for number 3.  In fact I'd skip entirely as it doesn't relate to the storyline in any way.

There do seem to be a lot of inconsistencies in the plot include a mysterious stranger who is never explained.  The fourth was my favorite and represented a return to the original Halloween's true roots.

I really enjoy watching franchises in this way and wondered if anyone else had different strategies in how they approach the epics?
