  • Death and the Maiden - Good Theater Bad Movie

While watching the Death and the Maiden, I had some really conflicting opinions about the film.  First off it was a drama which isn't really my cup of tea because I like to be reminded about how great life is instead of how tough it can be.  Nonetheless there is a time and an audience for dramas, so if you happen to like dramas, it might be worth checking.  My second conflict was in the production of the film.  The whole film really only revolves around three characters and while there are several settings used, most of it takes place in the living room of Sigourney Weaver's character.  The film was really created more as an adaptation to a play then a movie.  This means that it has rich dialoge and great acting, but say goodbye to the special effects.  A lack of special effects doesn't make it bad, but again it's part of what makes this an intense film to watch.  Finally, the subject matter is more then a little sensitve, so you should be prepared for some heavy thought during this one.

There are a couple of scenes that are pretty amazingly powerful and moments that won't be easy for me to forget, but overall I wish that I would have skipped out on this one and watched something more lighthearted.  In the end, it all comes together, but the film served to raise more questions then answers.

    Witness  (1985)

Over the last 20 years, I've probably seen Witness show up on TV at least 10 times.  Each time I saw that it was on, I'd watch for a minute and then move onto something more excited.  The film has always gotten great reviews and I figured that it was a great film, but I had always walked in on the boring parts.  Unfortunately, after watching the whole movie this weekend, I can tell you that the whole thing is boring.

The film starts off by following an Omash mother and child on their way to visit relatives.  Unfortunately, the son witness the murder of a police officer at a train station and becomes a crucial witness in a police corruption case.  The whole movie is spent "protecting" the child from these bad guys who someone feel that by killing the kid their problems will magically go away.  They eventually have a stand off and of course Harrison Ford saves the day, but the whole movie moves very slowly and requires several brain suspension if you really want to get into the film.  Overall the acting was well done, but it's hard for me to reccomend this as a classic from the 80's.

  • Dude You Need to See This Movie

    The Big Lebowski  (1997)

The Big Lebowski is an absolutely classic tale.  It's what Pulp Fiction would have turned out like if it was a comedy.  I'd love to see them come out with a sequel.  The film is set in the Los Angeles Valley and Dude Lebowski is the victim of a mistaken identity and spends the whole movies trying to get justice after a couple of dumb mobster ruin his rug.  The film itself can be a little surreal, but well put together and delightfully entertaining.  On my list of favorite movies of all time.

    Bad Santa  (2003)

I'm not sure how this one ended up in my Netflix  queue, but I spent my weekend celebrating Christmas in May, but this movie turned out to be anything, but heartwarming.

The premise of the movie is that there are two criminals that knock off a store mall each year and the movie starts with them finishing a job and finishes with a bungled attempt the following Christmas.  Bernie Mac did a good job of being funny, but the whole movie seemed like it was created more for the shock value of seeing a midget curse then for good filmmaking.  Next year, don't expect to see this one on my wishlist.

  • Should Have Let Others See This Instead

    The Others  (2001)

I rented The Others from Netflix this weekend and was a little confused at why the film was so highly rated there.  Nicole Kidman plays a conservative widow who is responsible for raising two kids with a rare condition that makes them alergic to light.  The movie does a good job of exploring the supernatural realm and a few of the twists and turns are delightfully unexpected, but overall the film is very slow, boring and lacks the chemistry necessary to keep a viewer engaged for two hours.  Part horror movie, part psychological thriller, but all PG13.  The movie had all the appeal of a traditional thriller without the body count.

  • Ghost Riders in The Sky

The Blues Brothers and this sequel were both fantastic films.  In fact the Blues Brothers are one of the few musicals that I actually liked.  Featuring some really great blues beats, the music is part comedy, part musical and part mission from God.

To honor the blues brothers I've decided to perform the song Ghost Riders in the Sky from the soundtrack for my Air Guitar competition on Thursday night.  I've selected 60 seconds from the track where I'll have to play the song and be judged on my air guitar.  It should be a great time, Current TV is expected to be there and if I can find a clip, I'll link to it on my blog.
