  • Raising Helen

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

    Hello,

How many people here, have seen the movie,"Raising Helen", with Kate Hudson, starring in the title role?

I love that movie. We own it. Anyway. I loved that movie, because I have 3 sisters, myself, and I could never imagine ever, losing any ot them in death.

Although, we are all very different from one another, we do share some views.

Helen, is a young, beautiful, successful woman, who lives the perfect life.

She's a sister,an Aunt, and a friend, has money, works for a huge ad agency, and works with all the top models. She goes to all the shows, books the best and most popular models for print work, ramp modeling, and other things that involve modeling.

She has an older sister, played by Joan Cusack, and an even older sister,Lindsay(actress name escapes me,sorry), who is married, has 3 kids, and is very, very close to Helen,in a way that Joans' character, envies. Even though she, is married herself,is a great Mom,and has a lot of really nice things.

Well, Helen, is very close to her nieces and nephew, and even is privy to the new fake i.d., her older niece has acquired. One day, Helen is having lunch with some of her work friends, and recieves a phone call that will devistate her,and change her whole world. Her sister,Lindsay, along with her husband, have been killed in a horrific car accident. Pretty soon, she and her only remaining sister, are called to a meeting with Linsdays' attorney, regarding the children and her estate. As it turns out, Helen, is to take on Lindsays children, and raise them, herself. This just shocks both Helen and her sister, since the sister, is the experienced Mom,and Helen is,in her sisters' words, "tra la la, Helen". In other words, has never had much responsibility other than her ejob, ever. Her sister really resents this, and is always arguing with Helen about this decision that Lindsay made. She does'nt understand why Helen would gain custody of the kids, and questions Helen about it.

Anyway. Helen has the kids move in,and soon it becomes apparent that Helen will no longer be able to fulfill her duties as an Executive Assistant, and is asked, sort of, to leave her position with the company. This devistates Helen, and makes the kids feel bad. The, with the loss of her great paying job, she is forced to give up her luxury apartment, and move to the Bronx, and, to a larger apartment. Well, Helen soon learns how difficult it is to be a "Mother". She no longer has a social life,as she once knew it,and is having to relocate the kids to another school. She begins having behavioral problems with her oldest Niece,Audrey. Audrey starts cutting class, getting caught making out with the school bad boy in the school, which just happens to be a Lutheran School, and is called in to see the Preacher. They begin to get to know each other, and he begins helping her through the transition from Happy-Go-Luck Auntie, to the family warden, and has to start learning to discipline Audrey. Audrey, like any teen girl, starts to resent Helen, much the same way she would have begun resenting her own Mother,LIndsay, had she been alive.

As the movie progresses, Helen and the Preacher, fall in love,go through the night where Audrey and the bad boy, sneak one of Helens' credit cards and rent a motel on the other side of town. Audrey, you get the feeling, really regrets her decision to do that, but, when Auntie and Aunt Helen show up at the motel, Audrey is really angry at them. Well, Helen starts thinking she has no business raising kids, and almost gives up on the kids, when she and her remaining sister, talk some more on the subject, and read each others' letters from Lindsay, explaining why she chose Helen.

Though she believed with all her heart, that the one sister was a great Mother, she had chosen Helen, because Helen, was most like her,and would undoubtedly, raise the kids much the same way Lindsay would have. They thought the same way, loved the same things, and were very close.

Slowly, the 2 sisters realize this, and, Helen does learn to be a "Mom" to her NIeces and Nephew. This is the beginning of the "healing" between the 2 sisters, and they draw closer than they ever were before, and, Helen lands the Preacher Man. As a woman with 3 sisters, I know how I would feel if I ever lost any of my sisters. And, though we don't always see eye to eye, I think I would have been able to understand why my late sister would have made the decision she would have made about having to raise her son. It would be very tough at first, going from the cool aunt to the person who is now in charge. The movie was so sad, when the family at first, had to go through the funeral, and transition to a different set of roles, but, eventually, the pain lessened, and all were able to finally get into a routine, and love each other again. I guess that's why this movie moved me so much. I have kids, and i have sisters withwhom I am very close to.

    Phantasm  (1979)

This movie scared the hl out of me at every turn.

It was so beautifully done, with that huge, pale white man, who always said,"Boy". He really creeped me out.

A few years ago, I had a couple of friends who actually owned one of the black cudas used in the movie. It was a beautiful, but, stripped down car. All black, with one heck of a powerful engine that scared me to ride it,but, I still did. lol.

The movie had blood, screams, ghosts, demons, frightened girls and boys, plenty of dark, spooky corners for the baddies to hide in.

I loved the movie. I would highly recommend it for a Halloween Party,or, just to watch with a few friends. make sure it's a good mix of females and males.

  • Simply Irresistable-by Mark Tarlov

My entire family loves this movie, and, we own it.

It's about Amanda Shelton(Gellar) who has interited her Mothers' Restaurant,The Southern Cross',which has it's loyal patrons, who are there, every day. When Amanda discovers that her restaurant has been going under, and the new landlord has raised the rent to a whopping, $5,000per month, she and her Aunt(Betty Buckley), think that they will have to close the restaurant, after it has been in operation for over 70 years. Amanda has lost all enthyusiasm, and is not inspired,at all. Until an early morning shopping spree to the local farmers' market, where, she meets Riley, and he points her in the direction of Tom,a top exec of Henri Bendl's. He is in the midst of building a up-scale restaurant, and has hired a pain in the butt, but, very popular Chef, Valderon. They talk for a few minutes, then, go their separate ways. Tom, is a very intelligent young man, with a lot on the ball, except, he is totally unlucky in love, and his current female lead,(Amanda Peet), is a girl he has only dated 3 times.

What transpires between the 3 of them, is hysterical, and yes, almost predictable, but, is very funny anyway. Magical things start to happen after she is talked into buying a basket of pinky toes(crabs) by Riley. What is so special about the one crab who is always getting away, and seems to have a real personality to the point, that Amanda takes it everywhere with her.

You see? It's not a spectacular movie, but, it's definatley worth watching.

It has humor, love, chicken hearted men, sultry women(Patricia Clarkson),innocence, confusion, good food( I wouldn't mind finding the recipe for thse delicious looking eclairs that take everyone who eats them to whole new levels of obsession, and wanting ;). myself.

Myself, I have watched it over and over and over, again, along with my entire family. I have yet, to meet someone who did not enjoy that movie.

It has a sweet ending, too. One of Gellars' last lines in the movie is kind of corny, but, so what. It's still fun to watch.

  • Patricia Clarkson- She was in "Simply Irresistable". What does everybody think of that movie?

Was this review helpful? [Be the first to tell us!]

    Hello,

I was wondering what people thought of the movie,"Simply Irresistable".

I loved that movie that starred Sarah Michelle Gellar,Sean Patrick Flanery, and, Patricia Clarkson.

A very cute, funny, quirky movie about Amanda Shelton,a young woman who inherits a family restaurant from her Mother, after the mother dies.

Betty Buckley(Carrie) is her Aunt, and they agree to run the restaurant together. But, Amanda isn't the grea cook her  mother was. To her, her life has been just ordinary, and when she is at the local farmers' market, doing the morning restaurant shopping, she meets Riley, an Angel and friend of her late mothers'. Only, she doesn't know, he is a current friend of her late mothers'.While doing the morning shopping, she has a conversation with Riley, and, when Amanda sees Tom(Flanery), she doesn't know who he is, but, Riley says,"Oh, good.  You've spotted him". She tells him, she's never heard of him before, and he replies," Not Valderon, the other one". Meaning, Tom(Flanery).

Well, eventually, Tom, who is a top executive a Henri Bendels' Department Store, shows up at her restaurant, after he and his date,(3d date actually), Amanda Peet, are driven to her restaurant, instead of the expensive one, they wanted to go to.Crazy things start happening when they come in to order, and Amanda and her su chef, are watching, and can't understand why things are happening after she and Nolan(su chef) serve Tom and his date, their lunch.

Everyone in the restaurant(the regulars and her Aunt) see it as an omen. A good thing. Well, after the mishap at her restaurant, she goes to Bindels' to purchase new dishes, since Tomes' date smashed all the ones she had on hand. They get to talking more, and things begin to transpire between them, that scare him, and amaze and delight Amanda.

Well, instead of telling the whole story, please go see it,rent it,whatever you can. Get this movie. It is so sweetly done, and has humor, love, magic, and much more to offer.

  • Murder by Numbers

I love Sandra Bullock, and most of her movies, but, this was a good movie, and I am not sure which way to go with this one.

I spend a lot of time, watching shows like,"Forensic Files","Cold Case Files, and shows of this genre, but, I think the way they did this movie, was somewhat believable, and, Sandra Bullock does have the intelligence to pull this kind of role off. Her character was a victim of domestic violence, and, seemed to be working off repressed memories of her own, that helped her throughout the investigation of the murder of the girl.

Richard Gosling isn't one of my favorite actors, but, he does play a really good, bad kid,and his characters make you believe he could pull off this kind of crime. Michael Pitt, played Justin Pendleton,a young man who was, in my opinion, a very disturbed individual who was a follower, and became the leader type, and could, eventually, pull off the same thing,if ever put in that situation.

I liked this movie, but,I don't have any desire to run right out and buy it,any time soon. Chris Penn, was (God rest his soul), not one of my favorite actors either. His brother,Sean, has never been one to ever, get me to eve watch any of his movies. Just don't like him,so, that may be why I am not a fan of Chris', either.

  • Blood and Chocolate

I had wanted to see this movie just from the trailers alone.

I finally found it at Walmart about a month or so ago,and bought it for $19.99.

I love this movie so much, I watch it every day.

The story line is very well done, and easy to follow.

The photography is beautifully done. You get a chance to see a country not many U.S.  citizens get to see.

The movie is set in Bucharest,Romania which is a country steeped in history, beginning with the legend of Dracula. The original Dracula, known as Vlad the Impaler, and his castle still stands in Transylvania,Romania.

This story is about the legend of the "Lu Garue". People who can shape-shift from human form to that of a wolf. Not the typical stereo type of the werewolves, but,an actual wolf. The changes they make are so beautifully done, and there is no pain involved for the Lu Garue. It seems to have a very spiritual feel and look to it.

It is about a young girl by the name of Vivian, and her "pack". She lives with her Aunt Astrid, and was orphaned to her Aunt as a small child of around 8 or 9 when her entire family were slaughtered by Hunters in the Colorado Rockies.

In her "pack", the leader,Gabriel, played wonderfully by actor Olivier Martinez, and as the leader, he takes a new "wife" every 7 years.

His new choice is rumored to be Vivian. Only Vivian, is of a different mind, and does not agree with this tradition. Her Aunt, was one of Gabriels' "wives", and is still suffering from his departure from her life. They have a son together they call Raiff.

Raiff, is a renegade always getting into mischief.

One night, while Vivian is sitting in a historical church, she looks down to see a guy sitting just below her,and they end up meeting.

She tries to avoid him, but, inevitably, they fall in love, which is something that is forbidden in her "pack". Humans are a thing to fear, and not trust.

Their story is so beautiful, and testifies to the fact that just because you are not the same religion, race,or whatever, that does not mean, you can not be friends, and have the same things in common.

In other words, look beyond the lines of difference to get to know the person, and not judge.

I loved this movie, and bought it.
