    Hangover  (2009)

Plot: The movie begins with one of the grooms friend calling the bride as she is rehearsing for the wedding  that they won’t be able to make it to the wedding since they lost the groom : And what a better place and time then at Doug’s bachelor party in Vegas.  The trio in the party wake up after a night of crazy partying to a trashed up hotel room with a baby in the closet, Mike Tysons tiger in the washroom and a half naked chick prancing out of the room.  They are called upon to retrace their steps backward to the previous night to find Doug so that they can make it to the wedding on time.

    Review:

Based on the target audience (18 young males and females) this is one heck of a movie and probably one of the best comedies this summer.  For everyone else it can be described as raunchy, gross humor specially catered to a younger male audience.

The hangover is clearly a man’s movie, but it doesn’t fail to deliver in terms of cleverness and storytelling. Although the movie isn’t straight up funny as one would expect it to be, there are numerous scenes that are entertaining and hilarious. Right from the start till the end it captivates the audience and gets them thinking as to the possible whereabouts of the groom.  The search for the missing groom results in a hilarious investigation to find his whereabouts before the wedding day and undoubtedly this stirs up the hilarious consequences of the past nights celebrations.

Unlike more recent comedies (such as the Harold and Kumar series or Borat) that fit into this sub genre, The hangover isn’t over the top or outright funny.  The Director, Todd Philips renowned for Old school, placed a lot of attention on the story telling and the plot of the movie. This is what makes this comedy stand out from others.  Where this movie lacks in outright hilariousness, it makes up in clever, entertaining and funny story telling.

The hangover represents a new era of “boys gone wild” type of comedy. This is definitely one of Philips better works by trying to marry the concept of “what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” to a comical movie.  As mentioned earlier the humor isn’t pushed over the top but there are definitely elements of rowdiness, and crude visuals.  Although this movie is funny and entertaining, don’t count on it as being one of the best comedies in a long time.
